I really like the FF 1 6.5 in brent's auction...I know it sold for 12500 or so in Nov 08...just that the market has been up and down on it...

I only wish peewee's copy had been chip free

Me too.

(shrug)

Just a few chipping, but it has WHITE pages.

believe it or not, I prefer cr/ow pages to no chipping! that is just me and my pet peeve

While I prefer not to have chipping, I really doesn't bother me as its production related. I feel it adds character to the book.

Ditto. It's a part of Marvel, just like the cheap, brittle inks, the oil heavy interior inks and the funky paper they used. Makes me feel like a kid every time I think about how terrible the production was...if that makes sense.

Put me down for hating chipping, unless it's quite minor. Anything where there are 1/4" or more chunks missing from the side is a book I don't bid on. That AF15 CGC 8.0 that sold on Heritage for a relatively low price recently had a bunch of small chips missing from the right edge, NO idea how that one got 8.0. :screwy:

I can't really tell how many chips the FF #1 in question has, the scan is quite small and VERY fuzzy, but it does appear there's a 1/4" chip missing to the right of the fire hydrant.

I remember someone telling me that they thought that every copy of FF #1 had chipping on it and was convinced that at some point many copies were trimmed. I guess back before the internet that was the perception.

I remember that 8.0, that is why it only went for 58K or so...

I just dislike marvel chipping...really distracts from the book...hence, the only reason I will buy non marvel chipping copies (thumbs u

You can also say that to the AF15 7.5 on ebay right now. (thumbs u

I didn't see a 7.5 on ebay this morn, when I checked...

but, that is one area I totally disagree with cgc on... you can't "allow" chipping when there are many copies that are not chipped... in other words, an 8.0 should display the same characteristics... to me, that 8.0 with chipping is a 4.0 (or whatever)...and should be graded as such...

back in the day, marvel chipping was taken into account in the grade (thumbs u

Here's the listing. Wow, very heavy CHIPPINGS on the side.

I'm about 95% sure CGC doesn't ignore chipping, I think they just didn't weight on it enough on the AF15 we're talking about. The biggest example of this is the Pacific Coast Amazing Fantasy 15, which without chipping would be 9.x, but with it, CGC gave it a 6.5. Here's another bit of evidence, my FF #4; it's got a chipped tear on the right edge to the right of the Thing's knee where the piece is still intact, as well as a second tinier 1/16" tear to the right of his foot. Without it, that book is a 9.4/9.6, but with it, just an 8.5

When I mentally compare this book to the Pacific Coast AF15 CGC 6.5, CGC's weight on chipping is consistent; the Pacific Coast book's chipping is definitely twice as bad as this 7.5 on ebay.

CGC has been fairly consistent with chipping IMO. Sure the odd book slips through but over all, they have taken it into account when grading books.

I'd say your 8.5 would grade higher if it didn't have pre tears up the side (and I think I see several).

If you notice...that 7.5 has some light pieces holding onto it's life along the top right corner. I would be  to get it re-holdered.

I don't mean they are not consistent comparing chipped copies to chipped copies... I mean that under NO circumstance should a chipped book even sniff 8.0 (like that one did) just My opinion

which copy, to the eye, looks better and do you think should be graded higher:

ebayaf15c.jpg

or this one

Bottom copy any day and anytime. (worship)

my point...the top copy is the ebay cgc 7.5

the bottome copy is a cgc 6.5 (due to light 6" crease that barely breaks color that you can barely see)

Based upon the scans, the bottom copy. Based upon your description, the top copy.
