Bowie and the Spiders playing live on Top Of The Pops - very unusual for a band to do that on that show (nearly always lip-syncing to playback of the original track).

Was that primarily because they had limited time (no chance to run long on a performance)? I wonder if the show dictated this or the bands management.

It was the show - the producers, who were generally very old-fashioned up until the 80s, were not interested in spontaneity or edge...they always preferred cheesy middle of the road acts who never improvised. And yes, each part of the show was done separately, with the audience being shepherded from one part of the studio to the other.

It was the number one music show on British television for several decades, so everything was strictly formatted.
