That is pretty freakin' weird. The background to this back cover is a drawing by Alfred Crowquill from 1870. It shows his characters from his 1849 comic book Pantomime, including the costumed hero Harlequin.

I knew the drawings looked 19th century and had to be from something, but I didn't know what. Too cool.
