Would you consider an under $200 category? Any type of piece can be entered, but can't be posted in its formal category.

What if someone bought a page for $150 in 1983 but is just putting it on CAF now =)

2016 = acquisition date, not CAF post date ;)

Problem with value categories, no way to verify. The other categories are easily to distinguish from their description, under $200 is all up to the person. Don't want to deal with the inevitable emails "That looks like its cost more than $200.

....I Still say there should be a "sketch cover" category.

Another category or just expand the con drawing one. Looking at alot of the sketch covers in CAF most look similar to con drawings. I don't think we would get enough entries if there was a separate sketch cover category.

It would be the honor system, for sure. Still, it might be worth a try.

Would people honestly email you to complain? I find that astonishing. You guys are organizing this as a fun event for the community. Da noiv of some people!

I actually like the delineation between con sketch and commission which you have now. Some sketch covers fall into either category. So my vote would be to keep it as is for sketch covers.

Yes some would. I have been overseeing the Best of for over a decade on the CAF (and before that on comicart-l). I do get emails like that.

Yup, you will have people putting splash pages into panel (it's subjective if it is not a full splash) and full blown commissions as con sketches.

As I said.. let's get ready to rumble...

Another good year I didn’t buy as many pieces as in past years. Did fill in some holes in my collection for artists I had been wanting nice examples of including Joe Kubert, Dave Stevens and Carmine Infantino. As usual its always hard to pick just 5 so I have included my runners-up.

My Top 5 for 2016:

The Rocketeer, Volume 2, Cliff's New York Adventure page 29 - Dave Stevens (Published: Interior Panel Pages)

Loved Dave's Rocketeer from the first time I read it in Pacific Comics Starslayer. Always a fan of the old Commando Cody serials, Includes Cliff and Peevy, some great dialog (boy I miss that on modern comic art) and expressions by Peevy. The cherry on top is the inclusion of the Bull Dog Cafe (an LA landmark) on the page.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8432

Avengers #58 page 12 - John Buscema and George Klein (Published: Interior Panel Pages)

From the classic "Even An Android Can Cry" story by Roy, John and George. My 2nd page from the issue. For me Klein is my favorite inker over Big John.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8433

Secret Agent X-9 "The Key To Power” - Al Williamson (Published: Strip Art)

This was Al Williamson and Archie Goodwin's audition for the X-9 strips and later called Secret Agent Corrigan. Showcasing Phil Dexter aka X-9. Great example by Al from his prime period, some of the X-9 portraits have a strong Raymond influence.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8429

Osiris and Isis (plate 3) - Nestor Redondo (Unpublished/Published: Others)

Fantastic inks, I have been after this page for a number of years. Published in "Men, Maiden and Myths" portfolio 1979.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8431

Excalibur #4 back cover - Alan Davis and Paul Neary (Published/Unpublished: Covers)

Love Alan’s rendition of Meggan one of the best back covers from the series.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8430

Runners-Up for 2016:

Warren Vampirella #110 cover - Enric Torres (Published/Unpublished: Covers)

Great cover by Enric from the original Warren. Love the colours.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1329979

Silver Surfer #1 cover (recreation) - John Buscema (Unplublishd/Published: Commissions)

This is the 2nd cover recreation I have picked up by BIG John. Iconic image, for me John is THE Silver Surfer artist. I like Kirby's version but Surfer looks better drawn by Buscema. He did this recreation shortly before his death.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1292615

Brave and Bold #15 page 26 - Joe Kubert (Published: Interior Panel Pages)

A great pages with the Viking Prince fighting his way to freedom and diving into the water.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1359465

Rocketeer Adventures #1: "Dear Betty…” - Mike Kaluta (Published: Splashes/Pin-Ups)

I loved it when IDW started publishing new Rocketeer stories done by different writers and artists. This is from the series Rocketeer Adventures anthology series, Kurt Busiek wrote this tale illustrated by Kaluta. Mike pays tribute to one of the most iconic images of WWII, taken in Times Square on V-J Day. Having Cliff and Betty stand in for the sailor and nurse was perfect. Love Mike's art for the short story.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1349814

Flash #142 page 3 - Carmine Infantino and Frank Giella (Published: Interior Panel Pages)

I have been searching for a nice page with Flash extracting his suit from his ring. Great next panel with him running. Bonus is Iris telling Barry he should be catching the Trickster and he then leaves to do just that and Iris made at herself. Classic silver age.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1332621

Bewitched page 2 (National Lampoon #1982-01 )- Bernie Wrightson (Published: Interior Panel Pages)

A parody Bernie did in National Lampoon of the sitcom Bewitched using the premise "What if Samantha and her mother Endora behaved like stereotypical Witches from horror movies?" Great caricatures of Agnes Moorehead! Love the classic EC page with nosey neighbor Gladys Kravitz with her eyes melting for being a Peeping Tom!

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1311418

Etta CANDY vs. THE Cheetah - 10 Rounds - HG Peter (Unplublishd/Published: Others)

H.G. Peter co-created Wonder Woman and drew her from 1941-1958. He also created Etta Candy and Cheetah . This watercolour piece was created in 1943. Very rare to find art by Peter especially in colour.

I'm very happy with the acquisitions for this year and deciding what to offer was tough. My tastes kind of wander around so you'll find a selection of comic art, but not much from the traditional superhero books that I buy every week. (How odd!)

In any case, I'll give you my top five and my almost made its.

My decisions are final - unless they aren't.

My Top 5 for 2016:

40 for 60 Sketchbook - Various (Unpublished: Sketch Covers/Convention Sketches)

Talk about a loving gift! My wife with support from my daughters worked for three years to create this sketchbook for my 60th birthday..It was a wonderful surprise. Yes, it's 40 sketches so I'm probably cheating, but it was one gift and for me that's what counts.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1323102

Katy Keene Fashion Book Magazine 22 page 16 - Bill Woggon (pencils) and Cassie Bill (inks) (Published Splashes, Pin-Ups)

Not as well known as other Archie beauties like Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, or Cheryl Blossom, Katy Keene never the less had a long career under the hand of her creator Bill Woggon. She was later revived by John Sterling Lucas who was hand selected by Bill Woggon. Still later, she had a brief run under Andrew Pepoy. This piece has it all - Katy in a gown designed by a fan and drawn by Bill with inks by his long time assistant, Cassie.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1303254

Nick Pitarra vs. Supergirl - NIck Pitarra (Published/Unpublished Commissions)

I simply cannot explain how much this commission pleases me. The art direction from me to Kathy to Nick was "Nick arm wrestling Supergirl" with a little background. Wow, he wildly exceeded expectations!

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1359451

Plutona - Emi Lenox (Published Covers)

Plutona was a great series. Get a copy of the trade, enjoy my cover, and read a moving tale about young people, death, and the impact of one on the other. Oh, this is also the first piece of art for the book.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1309119

Wonder Woman - Liam Sharp (Published/Unpublished Commissions)

LIam was bored; I had a little money to burn; this happened.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1319506

Okay, those are the ones that I picked, but I left some good stuff behind. :(

Runner Ups:

The Autumnlands: Tooth and Nail Poster - Benjamin Dewey (Published Splashes, Pin-Ups)

Want to read a story that's a cross of Kamandi and Planet of the Apes with great art, check out The Autumnlands. You'll be glad you did. This is the first published image for the book.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1309148

The Manhattan Projects 11 pg 10 - Nick Pitarra (Published Interior Panel pages)

Did you know that there wasn't a single Manhattan Project? Nope, the creation of the bomb was just a cover story for what was really going on. Read The Manhattan Projects for the real scoop!

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1309148

Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew (Tribute to JLA 29) - Scott Shaw! (Published/Unpublished Commissions)

My first comic was JLA 29 (1st series) and I've long thought that a version of that cover using Scott's characters would be fun.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1298169

Cutter/Nightrunner and Skywise/Starjumper - Wendy Pini (Published/Unpublished Commissions)

I bought Fantasy Quarterly for $1 because I liked the art on Elfquest. I figured that I'd never see a second issue. That proved to be true, but Elfquest went on to become an independent comic phenomenon. Wendy's art is hard to come by. She kept all of her published work and drew a relatively small number of commissions and those are held onto by their owners. I was glad to find this one!

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1325985

Little Robot page 44 - Ben Hatke (Published Interior Panel pages)

Want a treat? Read Ben Hatke's books - Zita the Spacegirl, Little Robot, Mighty Jack, and more. This page is from Little Robot.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1359874

Rankin/Bass Santa vs. Supergirl - Dave Aikins (Published/Unpublished Commissions)

My Secret Santa sent me this. I think it's delightful.

The Complete 2016 Collection

The Wife and I had our biggest OA year by far, both in dollars and in volume. We have really shifted our collecting habits (following a lot of great advice found on these forums and in Felix's podcast interviews) and I think the results speak for themselves...

Wonder Woman 165 page 4, pencils by Phil Jimenez and inks by Andy Lanning

Jimenez's design and layout here exceeds even the great George Perez. His WW model is both perfectly Amazonian and super-heroic. And his line work is brought to exquisite life by Andy Lanning. I mean, look at her hair! This page encapsulates everything you need to know about the character... a bridge of peace between the gods and humanity.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8511

Detective Comics 617 pages 17, 18 & 19, pencils by Norm Breyfogle, inks by Steve Mitchell

This thing is seriously HUGE! This piece repeatedly makes The Wife stand up and yell, "I am the Bat!". Breyfogle upended the way Batman was drawn and brought him into a new era. His cape and use of both regular and inverted silhouettes brought an energy at least equivalent to McFarlane's webbing. Norm's work on Detective was illustrative and emotive in the faces when necessary and then flatly graphic and even downright geometric when things needed to get really intense!

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8512

Joker (2008) page 16, pencils, inks, and wash by Lee Bermejo, inks by Mick Gray

Lee Bermejo is a phenom. Look closely at his strange, self-taught geometric shading technique. I've never seen anything like it. And his level of rendering puts most fine arts painters to shame. This is a great example of both his wash as well as his gnarly pencil style with inks by Mick Gray. Appropriately, his "Black Dahlia" take on the Joker was likely an inspiration for Ledger's seminal Joker interpretation. Every time I look at this page, I mutter, "wtf!"

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8514

Gotham Central 15 page 14, pencils by Michael Lark

"Zut alors! I haf missed one!" "Soft Targets" is likely the 2nd greatest Joker story ever told. It is a pity the dialog is not on this page, because this was THE SCARIEST MOMENT in a comic book I have EVER read. And Lark was the one who sold it. A scary man in clown makeup breaks out of holding, kills a cop with his handcuff, and then starts shooting the rest in the head, until it's just you (the secretary) and him! Greg Rucka once described Michael Lark's work as not photo-REALISTIC, but photo-JOURNALISTIC, which I think says it all. He is a master of body language and a true storyteller.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8519

Nexus: God Con 2 page 18, pencils by Steve Rude, inks by Gary Martin

Steve Rude may be the greatest comic artist of all time. Yeah, I said it. He out-Kirbys Kirby. His line is perfect (especially when Martin inks him.) His acting is equally full of comedy and drama. His design work on every costume, location, nut, and bolt is downright exhausting. And his layouts are so instinctually brilliant that they trick you into not noticing all of the other amazing things I just mentioned. The symetrical layout, the borderless "panels", the expressions, the over-the-top villain design, and the balance of blacks all really come together here. Steve Rude goes for broke on every page, never phoning it in.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=8520

Honorable Mentions --

Nexus: Executioner's Song 3 page 22, pencils by Steve Rude, inks by Gary Martin

The Dude can do super-heroes. The Dude can do drama. But The Dude does madcap comedy like nobody's business. This page is PACKED with site gags and detail. It's the kind of page you can hang up and always find something new to see in it... like Maggie Simpson?! How many artists can balance Dr. Suess, Groenig, Loomis, and Toth on one page?

Nexus: God Con 2 page 21, pencils by Steve Rude, inks by Gary Martin

VAM! Vootie!

Star Wars 20 cover prelim, pencils and inks and watercolor by Mike Mayhew

Mayhew brings every bit of his trademark energy to this prelim and then some. No one makes naturalistic or photo-real drawing look as easy Mike.

Winter Soldier 7 page 11 pencils by Michael Lark, inks over bluelines by Stefano Gaudiano

Lark and Guadiano are pb&j. This scene is perfectly staged and draws you into an action movie in progress. Excuse me while I pick the broken glass out of my face!

Other notable 2016 pickups-

Nightwing by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira

Catwoman commission by Unknown

The Exterminators by Tony Moore and Dan Green

Samurai: Heaven and Earth by Luke Ross

Pat Savage by Kewber Baal

Army of Darkness: Furious Road by Kewber Baal

Hi All,

I wanted to share my picks for this year:

http://www.comicartfans.com/MyLowry.asp?GSub=257

Alpha Flight #13 page 3 by John Byrne

I got into a bit of a bidding war here and probably overpaid, but I don’t regret it. I remember this storyline fondly and this page conveys so much without any dialog. I think Byrne was at his peak as a storyteller here.

Blondie Apr 11, 1941 (1st Cookie) by Chic Young

I’ve always liked the Blondie strip and thankfully nice examples by Chic Young are still relatively affordable. This features the birth of daughter Cookie and was being sold on behalf of Dean Young.

Hulk #373 page 24 by Dale Keown

I was a big fan of Peter David’s run on the Hulk and Dale Keown did some great work here. I also love Doc Samson, maybe because he's a perpetual underdog who's always getting his butt kicked by the Hulk.

Rock & Roll Comics #49 (Rush) cover by Scott Jackson

This isn’t the type of thing I normally collect, but I’m a huge fan of the band Rush. The comic was a bit disappointing, but I always thought the painted cover was great and couldn’t resist when it came up for sale this year.

S.H.I.E.L.D. pinup from Marvel Super-Heroes Vol 2. #6 Summer Special (1991) by Guice

Sorry for the crappy photo, but it’s large art and wouldn’t fit on my scanner. I bought this site unseen from Spencer’s site and got really lucky! You can see a larger scan here: http://www.comicsfun.com/comicsart/Miscellaneous?page=1

Honorable Mentions:

http://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=179980

I bought a lot of great art from Bruce Zick this year and couldn’t select just one for my Fave 5, so I’ve included two scans here. You should check out his gallery on comicartfans if you haven’t already:

Mandala Graphic Novel (Dark Horse) Chapter 4 Header

I’m amazed by the composition and imagery of this piece, even though I hadn’t heard of the graphic novel before Bruce posted it. This is a huge 17" x 21", so I had to take a photo instead of using my scanner.

Atlas #2 Cover (Dark Horse)

This mini-series had wonderful Kirby inspired artwork with great painted covers by Bruce Zick and Christina Sells.

Aardwolf published the Futurians Return graphic novel this year, featuring a final unpublished story by Dave Cockrum. As a Kickstarter supporter, I got a great Sienkiewicz pinup plus the color guide by Paty. I also bought an amazing page which was lightboxed from Dave Cockrum’s pencils by Robin Riggs. So far, the original pencil art hasn’t been up for sale.

Futurians Pinup from The Futurians Return – Bill Sienkiewicz pencils and inks

Futurians Pinup from The Futurians Return (Color) – Paty Cockrum

The Futurians Return page 11 – Robin Riggs over Dave Cockrum bluelines

Kesel, Karl - Suicide Squad #32 cover

I was a big fan of Steve Ditko’s Shade the Changing Man and was happy when DC brought him back in Suicide Squad. Kesel mainly inked this series, but he did a great job on this cover featuring Shade using his funky powers. This has an overlay with the Suicide Squad logo, but I think the art displays better without it.

Thanks as usual to Brian Peck for setting this up and Bill Cox for hosting.

Regards,

Ted L.
