$175 worth of $15 books in an hour? That's 15 books/hour, if my math is right. That's 4 minutes per book.

It's not. :kidaround:

Taking out the $0.50 cost of the book ($14.50 profit/book), this comes to be ~12 books/hr, or a book every 5 minutes.

Y'all work too hard

I didn't get into profit. He said he was flipping $175 worth of $.50 books an hour. Profit would require you to consider Ebay and paypal costs at a minimum, which would increase the number books to be done per hour. :baiting:

:foryou:

So after eBay fees, we're looking at about 13.5 books/hr.

Factor in PayPal fees, we're at 14 books/hr.

I am just a collector only. I have an enormous 24 page wish list for comics and comics stuff. I NEVER go off list and never would unless I came across some ridiculous deal. And I mean ridiculous.

I don't make my money fromantic comics. Also, my hobby takes enough of my time and between family work and everything else, I am loathe to spend time selling. I used to do so but got out of that game a long time ago.

Also, my comic budget has limits that I don't push by buying stuff hoping for a flip.

I know full well I have been that guy that you felt passed up valuable books right in front of you and I don't care in the least.

Also, yes, many many many people would not recognize the first doomsday. Many people don't know jack about comics except for a cool character they like from the movies. That's not something that makes them stupid.

I ran across a debate on another site recently about marvel value stamps. Some were shocked that sone many didn't know what marvel value stamps were. But...really...who would know that unless they were very involved in this industry?

The guy had a mish mosh of paper spread among several long boxes (magazines, comics, newspapers etc). I pulled out a few comics, nothing spectacular, which were $3. I was about to leave, when I took another look at a box that was primarily magazines, and there it was. After picking my jaw off the ground, in the calmest voice I could muster, I asked the gent how much - "Oh that one's old - $5." I quickly handed him $5 and skedaddled.

I came back to look through the boxes again and ask the guy if he had any other comics - he told me he had 3 others like that "old one" I had bought, but he sold it before. So I guess if any Action 1s come on the census, we will know where it came from.

Haha it makes you wonder if he did he any then someone got the score of a lifetime.

The OP made it seem like 2 comic guys had already hit the boxes, but maybe that's an assumption. They are not "many people" I assume. Maybe they just missed it or were only looking for old stuff or are not comic guys at all, just folks who think old comics are worth something and were checking it out.

But yes, people miss stuff all the time, even people who know their stuff, or are fixated on their want lists. At NYCC last year I snagged, for $2 a pop, 9.6-9.8 copies of Batman 358 (sold for $75 on ebay), Detective 523 (sold for $25 or maybe more on ebay), and Detective 566 (sold for $50 on ebay) from a major dealer, along with a few other Batman/Detective comics I wound up selling for $25+ (that mignola scarface/ventriloquist detective) ...and the show had already been open 2+ hours and people had been hitting his table hard...including 2 comic shop owners I know! So, aside from the big dealer missing them, multiple collectors/dealers missed them before I waddled in.

And yes, i know some of those books I cite have cooled off, but they were great sellers at the end of 2015

I can see scanning/listing at donut's pace, but packing is going to double the time unless he makes his kids do that for them to earn their keep.

totally off topic, but i have just discovered that there is a market for empty liquor bottles. this boggles my mind. my wife was going to throw something out that she had emptied that apparently sells for $20-$25. the booze itself was like $35 when we bought it. it is some sort of limited edition bottle.

As the owner of a distillery, I am always watching for antique whisky bottles.

I have sold torn ticket stubs to concerts that I have attended to for more money than I paid for the actual ticket. One in particular was a Grateful Dead show which was the last of a 6 night run of shows that would end up being Gerry Garcias last performance in Boston and I think one of his last few actual live shows.

this isn't an antique! This was bought at the liquor store last year! i have two bottles of absolute brooklyn limited edition (they still have vodka in them though), apparently, when empty, those sell for good money. people turn stuff into lamps and stuff i guess. i have no idea. my wife just polished off some really good scotch i bought her..small batch, $100 a bottle (Aberlour a’bunadh), and apparently the empties sell for like $10. it is a pretty bottle, sure.

I know, shipping this will be a PITA, but I'll survive

So grading, bagging/boarding, scanning, listing, printing postage, packing (not including time to get to USPS cause I know you get yours picked up) and that's on top of whatever time it took to acquire the books? Wow. That's quick.

Absolutely. Takes practice, but absolutely. I can process 15 books an hour all day long.

I sold a half stub from a 1977 Led Zeppelin show for $185. I found it in a desk at a friend of mine's beach house. We took the money and bought a couple nice bottles of wine and a couple of steaks and had a great dinner with our wives.

That show likely cost a whopping $7.50 back in 77'. I used to cringe as they would tear my stubs. I always begged to not tear it so much, but that only resulted in me getting a real small stub

Check out the prices for empty Crystal Head Vodka bottles. I used to work at a casino that carried this stuff and I would always check out the trash cans filled with empty liquor bottles to see if any were thrown out, but never found any.
