Enjoyed this. Especially the roundtable on this one. Interesting to hear the chats when the table is with people of mixed interests and collecting levels, because they each inject a unique perspective. Would love to hear more of these with collectors of varying backgrounds.

hey Felix,

fantastic podcast as usual.

At the end of the podcast you hinted that you were going to record another one with newer collectors etc.. is that going to be the next one?

Thanks!

Actually, I had a third segment planned with artists and sketch collectors, but just wasn't able to make it happen (everyone was ready except the sketch collector got tied up!). A relatively high-profile figure in comics fandom, even if I would guess he's mostly unknown around here. But a smart guy...will try to get everyone together in 2017.

Thanks Eric. The "collecting on a budget" episode has proven to be extremely popular, and I've gotten a ton of feedback on it, so it's encouraging that the audience is there for a wide range of collectors, beyond old-timers and BSDs.

Okay, I can't for the life me figure out what "BSD" stands for. The closest I've gotten is "buyer, seller, dealer." (shrug)

Catching up on the latest Paul Pope episode. Gold star for more Nexus love and then bonus points for random digression into the mad genius of Klaus Kinski. Whaaat? lol!!!

EDIT: Whoa. Just Googled Kinski. This is why I sometimes don't want to know the people behind the art.

Felix, these are so great! Thank you very much!

I don't actively collect OA, but many aspects of OA collecting mirror Golden Age comic collecting (scarcity, market, uniqueness of each book, financial projections etc) so I can really relate to you guys.

Any chance you could chat with anyone about Schomburg original art collectors?

An episode dedicated to Golden Age art?

Chats with other OA dealers?

Chats with Golden age comic dealers like Harley, Jamie Graham, Carbo, or Terry?

Why does Albert think he'll be dead within 10 years? Overworked?

I'd like to hear more about the Japan collectible toy trips. I knew a vintage toy dealer in Boston who used to do that in the late 80's and 90's and he had all kinds of interesting and strange stories from his trips through Japan attempting to buy vintage tin and diecast toys for his store.

Thanks again!

This is how much of a legit art nerd Paul Pope is: I showed him a random page of art from NEXUS...and he was able to ID the exact issue. He's a huge Steve Rude fan.

I'm open to chatting with GA art collectors. But while I know collectors who own GA art, I'm not sure I know any who ONLY collect GA art.

I'll probably be talking to other OA dealers down the line.

I probably won't be talking to GA comic dealers, unless they're also into OA.

I'm fairly certain Albert was making a joke.

Who's the vintage toy dealer? I probably knew him at some point!

For everyone else...new episode of the podcast is coming next week. I'm running a little behind schedule this month, but should be back on track for December. :wishluck:

The Felix Comic Art Podcast welcomes our first international guest, Dr. Suat Tong Ng! Suat is a physician living in Singapore in his everyday life. In his off-time, he's an original art collector, comics critic, and the brainiest guy I know! We talk about European art, underground art, his feud with Eddie Campbell, Frazetta's pornographic drawings, and more!

Another fantastic episode Felix.

Loved the back and forth. Enjoyed the questions going both ways in the sense that Dr Ng asked Felix almost as many questions as Felix asked of his guest. If folks haven't taken the time to listen, do yourself a favor and do it. It's lots of fun if you are passionate about comic art.

Would love to hear what others took from the discussion.

Dr Ng definitely has a super interesting perspective on comic art. While he seems to collect primarily for nostalgic reasons - he doesn't let that nostalgia get in the way of logic when it comes to spending.

The most interesting comment for me was the one about spending 20k on a dark knight page that is "OK", and that he doesn't really love.

He justified it by saying that if he were to re-sell it, he wouldn't have to worry that he would lose financially on the transaction.

On the other hand, he compared that to buying a Fun Home page that he loves -and pointing out that if he were to pay 20k for that page, it would be a bad idea since he could never recover his money from it (since he values such a page at around 1k -that would mean a 95% instant loss.)

This discussion kind of explained in a nutshell the fine line that all us art collectors have to walk -between collecting what we love, but being mindful that we don't (potentially) throw too much of our money away in the process.

The 2nd most interesting thing for me was the idea that asian collectors or younger collectors would rather have a Jim Lee, Adam Hughes or Frank Cho page than a Watchmen page (price not withstanding- that is if you had to pay the same for any of them).

Well - I am not asian, but I am in that boat. A lot of the time, people like the art attached to a story they love. That's how I see Watchmen. It served the story masterfully. For me however, it's dull to look at. On the other hand, I have a lot of Jim Lee/Adam Hughes/Frank Cho comics that frankly suck - but I still love them because I didn't buy those comics for the story in the first place. I bought them for the art. So owning the original art from those comics is a step up.

Not sure how many of you - collected comics primarily for the art? the story or a combination. It's easy to say combination -but that might depend on the era you grew up collecting in?

Loved this episode. Suat's gallery has been on my CAF watchlist for a while now.

Really enjoyed hearing what he had to say.

Panelfan, regarding your last question about the good art/bad writing balance and preference, I actually tried to start a topic about that here a month or two back but it fizzled out...

Thanks guys!

Panelfan1: I collected comics primarily for the story, and that's certainly shaped how I've approached collecting OA. But there's more balance now in how I collect OA. Years ago, I asked the question here that if Rob Liefeld had drawn WATCHMEN, would collectors still want the art? My answer is still yes...but obviously not to the same degree.

For anyone interested, here's a link to Suat's article on the Frazetta pornos:

http://www.hoodedutilitarian.com/2015/11/dont-hide-your-candle-under-a-bushel-mr-frazetta-nsfw/

Just read it again and had a good laugh. The comments section is worth visiting, too. A professional dominatrix makes an appearance with some first-hand insights into Frazetta's commonly shared predilections. Good stuff.

Will post other links later.

Another great podcast really like David talking collecting in general and what to look out for when you buy a piece of art. One thing you didn't talk about was art for published covers that are made up of a combination of art and stats, but the separate original drawn cover is slightly different. Someone at the publisher usually the editor had the cover changed in pre-production. The problem is they are then sold or at auction and promoted as the original art and the scans made it hard to tell if its all original art. An example where you really need to do research, too many times on auctions the description or scans can be very misleading.

You mentioned the forthcoming Lucas Museum, you forgot about the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco which will be re-opening next year. I hope in a future podcast you interview Andrew Farago curator of CAM. He is not a collector or dealer but has a unique insight into comic art since he has curated some great exhibits like Spider-Man, Mad, Gene Colan.

I have to admit, I have not yet dived in to the podcasts, but I have just recently discovered Felix's 'Show & Tell' series and it's honestly some of the best stuff I've seen. I love the way it's produced with the art front and center and the owner in a voice over saying, apparently, whatever comes to mind when they look at the piece.

The stories are great, and surprisingly often, touching. I particularly enjoyed Scott Dunbier speaking about his Manhunter piece and sharing yet another story detailing how nice of a guy Walt Simonson is.

Top notch stuff, they should have more views.

(Speaking of which, Felix, you may want to gather things together into Playlists, just a thought.)
