An early WDC&S that was the right price (even allowing for the steadily declining exchange rate  ). It has a few flaws, but it's really solid and a delight to read.

I'll post some inside shots later. I really like these big format early books.

I have never noticed the dog on this cover before. Great Christmas cover and a great book! Congratulations!

I love these!

Speaking of cool things, be sure to check the just released Donald Duck #5 (from IDW): after 46 years (my own age) the first apperance and origin of Paperinik (the Duck Avenger) is presented for the first time to the english-speaking population (and in USA). ;)

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to see if I can track down a copy. :)

Many of those stories were well written and the character was quite popular back home when I was a teenager. Thanks, Italy, for the Duck Avenger, even if no one else here has a clue who he is...

So true! I collect WW II cover Timelys but I cannot resist a cheap duck book. Or a high-grade one. Or a cheap, high-grade one! :whee:

And by "here" I suppose you mean the States (as I seem to recall you work there). :)

Yes, this opens up a whole discussion on how the authentic spirit of Walt Disney was brought forward by our authors. I had this discussion with Scarpa once.

It is obvious (and undeniable) that the comics originated as an "american" product, but I have always felt Walt Disney vision as being truly "universal" (a lot more than Stan Lee's, for example): the Disney mythos is universal, and our first generation of authors was so imbued with its magic (not only the classic Disney comics) that the fact Walt Disney did not care much about comics did not stop them to build up a legacy in the best possible way.

Clearly, each author has its cultural background, but if you manage to enrich what is already been done (like Carlos Pacheco did on the Fantastic Four, for example) you pick up a tradition and effectively nurture and make it grow once again in its original spirit.

Pick it up, it’s very cool, and from what I get it’s only the beginning (David Gerstein is quite a fan).

Also, if you love the original Phantom Blot classic, and you have never read the Scarpa's follow-up, look for the Mickey and Donald (first Gladstone series) early issues (I believe they were 6-7-8). Here’s the splash page of #6:

My favorite Mickey Mouse!

commickeymouse1_zps4c5y8x4z.jpg

And with good reason! I would SO love to have this one, even if the actual first appearance of the Blot happened on the newspapers. (thumbs u

And it actually has a connection with my post: Guido Martina, the creator of Paperinik, was also the first author to pick and re-utilize the Phantom Blot, in "The Blot's Double Mystery", an early classic that Gladstone wisely presented in USA as the very first italian story finally landing there (it’s serialized in the early issues of Mickey & Donald, I believe 6-7-8, IRRC). :)

I just picked up this mouse chewed copy. Sadly, Mickey's relatives didn't have much respect for this book; or it just tasted really good! It probably would have graded 5.0 or so if not for the chews. Luckily the damage to the interior art was minimal.

The duck thread has been hibernating for the winter; time to ruffle the feathers for Christmas. While looking for my reader copy of Christmas for Shacktown this morning I came across this fun threesome I had put aside to read.

Nice! Good reading in those 10-pagers.
