Dark Horse Comics Bringing ‘Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Concrete’ to TV

Dark Horse Comics and Universal Cable Productions (Mr. Robot, The Magicians) have made a deal to turn a bunch of Dark Horse titles into TV shows. One of the first developments is based on one of the very first Dark Horse Comics. That title is Concrete, created, written and drawn by Paul Chadwick, which tells a story that is basically “what if The Thing lived a non-superhero life?”

Other series in the lineup include Harrow County, Back Up, and The Umbrella Academy, the Gerard Way comic that was previously in development as a feature at Universal.

Here’s a list of the Dark Horse and UCP development slate.

Harrow County – Emmy has always known that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home crawled with ghosts, goblins, and the restless dead. On the eve of her 18th birthday, she learns that she is connected to these creatures and to the land itself in a way she never imagined, for she is the reincarnation of a powerful witch who was put to death on the very day Emmy was born. For this reason, the townsfolk mean to kill her too. In order to survive, Emmy must embrace the unusual powers at her command. This project is based on the brand new book written by Cullen Bunn (“The Damned,” “The Sixth Gun”) and illustrated by Tyler Crook (“Bad Blood”).

The Umbrella Academy – Nine years after parting ways, the estranged members of the Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers, must figure out how to work together to save the world. Created by Gerard Way (lead singer of “My Chemical Romance,” and writer of “The True Lies of the Fabulous Killjoys”) and Gabriel Ba (Daytripper); Bluegrass films is also attached to executive produce.

Back Up – In the near future, a new technology allows people to be backed up the same way we now back up our computers—but instead of protecting against drive failure, these backups protect against death. This project is based on a feature -script by Tom Vaughn. Kenny Golde is set to write and executive produce, Brad Anderson (“Zoo”, “Almost Human”) is in negotiations to direct. Jim Wedaa is also attached to executive produce.

Concrete – After his subconscious is transplanted into a hulking stone body, Ronald Lithgow must come to terms with his new form and try to live a normal life. This Eisner award-winning title is the opus of comics legend Paul Chadwick.

It's about time someone digs deeper into Dark Horse's varying and deep creative portfolio.

"One of the reasons we went with Dark Horse was not so much the specific intellectual property they represent, but the people who were creating it. I'd rather be in business with a brilliant person than with a great idea," Universal Cable Productions chief Jeff Wachtel tells USA TODAY. "We're going big titles and big ideas. There's no question that in a crowded market having a big title helps you break through the clutter. But the real key is finding the people who make the stuff up. One of the great things about Dark Horse is that it's such a fertile factory of imagination."

"As the landscape of narrative storytelling evolves, Dark Horse is thrilled to be working in the golden age of television with Universal Cable Productions. Their creative team has embraced the spirit of the Dark Horse brand and we're proud to be partnered with them." Dark Horse founder Mike Richardson said in a statement accompanying Tuesday's announcement.

Of the newer Space or Scyfy tv series so far, I like:

1. Dark Matter - Dark Horse related series that I never read. Kind of like a mix of Firefly and The 100 tv series.

2. Humans - UK series with good writing about house-bots (androids) with some gaining artificial intelligence.

3. Kiljoys - featuring Aaron Ashmore (X-men movie's Ice Man) and team as bounty hunters but much weaker writing than Dark Matter.

All are downloadable from net.

This comics publisher has been standing up to Marvel and DC for almost 30 years — and isn't slowing down

In a world where Marvel Studios has helped turn comic books from niche entertainment to movie powerhouses, Dark Horse still seems resolutely old school. The company’s current TV and film ambitions — which include the SyFy series “Dark Matter” and a “Tarzan” film slated for 2016 — don’t mimic the mad dash to build multimedia mega franchises and cinematic universes seen in other companies.

The 2016 Tarzan movie is based on a Dark Horse comic book run??!!

Not a Dark Horse TV show. But from a Dark Horse Comics graphic novel.

Michael B. Jordan in Negotiations to Star in MGM’s Vampire Movie ‘Blood Brothers’

After working with MGM on Ryan Coogler‘s upcoming boxing drama “Creed,” Michael B. Jordan is in negotiations to star in the studio’s vampire movie “Blood Brothers,” based on the Dark Horse graphic novel, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

Dark Horse Entertainment is producing the action-comedy, and the graphic novel itself was based on a screenplay by “Tropic Thunder” writer Etan Cohen. Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller wrote the comic.

“Blood Brothers” is described as a buddy picture involving two party-loving vampires/best friends who team up to take on a villain obsessed with the apocalypse and destroying humanity.

And it comes from Ethan Cohen??!!

Universal Cable Productions Assigns THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY Producer

UCP has also attached a producer to develop Dark Horse comic “The Umbrella Academy.” Jeremy Slater (“Fantastic Four,” Fox’s upcoming “The Exorcist” series) will adapt Gerard Way’s series about a dysfunctional superhero family with powers that are a little stranger than just “super speed”—one has the ability to remake reality with a simple lie.

Other comics-based projects in the works at UCP:

- “The Woods,” James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas’ story of 513 Milwaukee suburbanites suddenly transplanted into a giant, ancient wilderness on another planet. Michael Armbruster (“Beautiful Boy”) will write.

- “Bushido,” about a young Dutch boy adopted by a samurai. Roy Lee (“The Departed,” “The Lego Movie”), Adam Stone (“The Voices”) will executive produce, and Markus Goerg, Hillenbrand, and Mikhail Nayfeld of Heroes and Villains Entertainment will serve as co-executive producers. John Powers Middleton (“Bates Motel”) is attached to produce.

- “The Good Neighbors,” Holly Black and Ted Naifeh’s tale of a faerie girl who has to travel from the human world to the faerie world to find her missing mother. Barbara Marshall will write, and Marshall, Jeremy Bell, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jon Shestack will executive produce.

“UCP continues to expand our genre slate and collaborate with luminaries from the world of graphic novels and science fiction,” said Dawn Olmstead, EVP Development, Universal Cable Productions. “We’re proud and fortunate to be partnering with some of the most imaginative and talented auteurs in the business.”

Looks like it is official, as much as they tried to hide it before SDCC.

Umbrella Academy Audition Tapes Surface; Series Films In Toronto

Netflix’s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy comic series will start filming early next year in Toronto — and audition tapes have already begun surfacing online. After years fronting My Chemical Romance, comic fan Gerard Way became a noted comic book writer when he and artist Gabriel Bá created The Umbrella Academy. Featuring layers of high concepts, the story focused on a 1977 where John F. Kennedy was never assassinated and a group of super-powered children were taken under the care of an eccentric alien dubbed the Monocle. The seven kids formed a sort of dysfunctional family, operating as superheroes in a strange mirror of our world.

Omega Underground got ahold of a number of audition tapes for The Umbrella Academy, with various actors auditioning for characters like the Boy, the Kraken, the Séance, and Spaceboy. The site has also learned that the show will shoot from January to July of 2018 in Toronto, Canada.

Netflix is expanding its IP possibilities once more in a new first-look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment, giving Netflix a wealth of options if it so chooses going forward. The two companies have already seen fruit from their partnership on The Umbrella Academy, which proved successful in season 1 and has already been renewed for season 2. Now Dark Horse will give Netflix a first look at IP for both film and television for future projects.

Dark Horse Entertainment's Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and Paul Schwake are signed on to produce, and couldn't be more thrilled about what the future holds for Netflix and Dark Horse's new partnership.

“We are very excited about this new arrangement with the talented people at Netflix," said Mike Richardson, Dark Horse Entertainment’s President and Founder. “We have strong creative relationships as well as a large content library to work with and, as we have seen with our recent projects, Netflix is the perfect partner to bring our stories to fans around the world.”

Netflix's adaptation of Polar coupled with The Umbrella Academy shows what the two are capable of together.

“Following the success of The Umbrella Academy, we’re excited to extend our relationship with Dark Horse Comics,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “The Netflix teams are already working in deep collaboration with Dark Horse to identify projects beyond the world of traditional superheroes -- branching into horror, fantasy and family entertainment -- that we think our members will love.”
