Wonder how many Church promo comics there are? hm
Here is one...

I know this might be a reach, but didn't Edgar work for the phone company? Is it signed or noted who the artist is? Could it possibly be Church himself?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that he tried to develop a newspaper comic strip. As a reasonably successful commercial artist and someone with a mania for comics, you would think he would have tried to break into comics. A one shot like this might be a way of gaining entrée to the field. Still, I would be very surprised if this is his work.

Here's a 6-panel original art page I have by Edgar Church, done in 1911. He attempted to get his feet wet by doing some comic strip material, unfortunately for him it did not go his way.

After looking at this one, I think I can see why his comicstrip career didn't go anywhere.

My only promo book. Still in my possession, too. Got it from the Heritage auction this scan is from. This book could also be listed under a "Reveal Your Drunken Purchases" thread. I was a rum and coker in those days and didn't even take note of the staple issue. (original staples removed 2 added after manufacturing)

Actually, for 1911, this is right in line with a lot of the work that was being published at the time. There were enormously successful cartoonists like Opper, whose work was not a lot more polished than this.

I know this is a late reply, but this is interesting speculation. I think there are two Church copies of this promo. Don't know how many other duplicates he had. Perhaps he kept multiples of this because he actually did the artwork?

Here are some more promo comic sets, with mailers, ads, and other materials.

This is a promo pack for a set of three 1/3-size promos. Never saw any of these little comics "in the wild" so they may never have gotten beyond the solicitation stage.

The Association of American Railroads distributed millions of comic books educating kids about trains. They were packed in different packs for classroom use. Here is a kit from the Southern Railway System.

Here is a pitch package for a series of comic books about the United States. Have never seen another comic in this series or a copy of this comic book in the wild, so this may be another promo pack for a promo comic that was never widely distributed.

Say what?

As Robot Man originally speculated:

Here is a black, red, and white promotional version of a comic book with a price list on the back cover. Also, a four color version of that comic - pretty beat, but it's the only "in the wild" version I've seen of this.
