STAR WARS #1

With respect to Star Wars #1 in 9.8 - I have a mixed point of view. On one hand I feel really lucky to have a copy in my permanent collection. On the other hand I feel really bad that I sold a double in 9.8 for only $500 last year.

I imagine that someday I'll find a massive box of Star Wars #1 9.8's. When this happens I'll be able to give out free copies to my friends and allies - provided they are willing to listen to lots of my opinions on favorite Star Wars stories.

I have owned 50 copies of that book over the years. It is not rare, not scarce in high grade, and was hoarded in bulk. I do not understand what is happening with the Late Bronze Marvels, but I don't understand it, and it is borderline frightening. Since everyone likes to know what commenters are holding, I have a cast signed 9.6 and 2-3 8.5-9.2 raws.

Here are the 9.8 historics From GPA:

2015 (25) $2,200Hi $900Lo

2014 (61) $830Hi $386Lo

2013 (32) $675Hi $395Lo

Damn. Seeing the 2015 numbers with every other year for the last 13 years like that really is quite telling, not to mentions somewhat jarring. I could only imagine what Ms. Marvel 1 would look like. :tonofbricks:

I have to agree that this book is out of hand. I have a few copies myself.

One another note, I have noticed more low/zero feedback bidders and buyers on my own auctions. And some of these people are clearly NOT regular 0 feedback buyers. I'm wondering if people sometimes do this for a reason. I am thinking about removing low feedback bidders in the future.

Something to consider. I know a lot of legitimate buyers won't even bid in an auction where it looks like that is going on.

Anyone who has been in this hobby for 10 years or more should be frightened. The entire market is a house of cards built on the back of movie hype. It won't last....it can't last.

I like getting silly prices for relatively boring/pedestrian books like Star Wars 1 in 9.8 (I had seven or eight 9.8 copies and have two remaining), but it's absolutely terrible for the long term health of the hobby. I don't know if these are shills, new money, dumb money, investors, speculators, whoever. In the end, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that it's not sustainable, people will get burned, and the back issue hobby in general will feel the aftershocks for years and years when the inevitable bust occurs.

Whew, I'm glad I sold my last copy at ComicLink for a mind staggering $2500. Cost me $110 raw in NYCC last year.

Going to be interesting seeing what the SW #1 CGC 9.6 35 cent variant on CL goes for. Doubt it increases the same as the regular #1 in 9.8.

The ComicLink auction for the Star Wars #1 (35 cent) price variant in CGC 9.6 just closed this evening. $36500 !!

I recall the ComicLink 2011 auction of this book in the same grade closed at between $21000 and $22000. The 2010 auction closed at about $26000.

The movie hype is strong with this one. (worship) I can only hope the hype machine does the same for the regular edition. :whee:
