If you're looking solely for protection during storage I actually put my slabs in Ziploc freezer bags. I've found the 13" x 15" sized bags are excellent for the oversized TMNT #1-#4 and they stay sealed nice and safe from air and water and are very thick plastic. It's not glamorous but you can't beat $4 for a box of 10 bags that seal everything out.

Have you noticed any adverse effects in the page quality doing this? I'm no chemist and don't know much about the finer points of conserving paper, but I do know that CGC slabs are specifically designed so they are not air tight and allow the comic to "breathe".

Interesting topic (and my apologies in advance for the long response). I haven't noticed any degradation but I've had them all put away now for years. I only take them out on rare occasions and, when I see them, they don't look to be adversely impacted. I suppose the only way to truly know would be to re-sub them and see how they grade out. I only have 15 slabbed books and the rest (over 1,500) are all bagged/boarded.

But this is a great jumping-on point for a topic I've spent much time and effort in researching. Do comics need to breathe? It seems to me that air is the enemy of comic books along with moisture (water or humidity), heat, and light. If that's the case, then wouldn't removing all those factors from the archive/storage process then prevent much of the degradation over the years? I believe this to be true and so, years ago, I came to the conclusion that if I sealed away the comics from air, water, light, and heat then I'd have all my bases covered. But there is some uncertainty about whether dirty air is the culprit causing degradation or it's just air itself. Is some air required (clean) to preserve comics properly or is air-tight the way to preserve? Again, do comics need to breathe?

But then there is also the argument about poly vs. Mylar bags along with what you bring up about the gasses being let off that would degrade the comic and possibly cause the poly bags and/or boards to negatively impact the comic. But does that degradation from gasses happen only when reacting to ambient air, light, heat, or moisture? Only with poly bags? Or does degradation due to gasses happen even if those air, light, heat, and moisture factors are taken away (poly or Mylar)? I honestly can't say if this is a real thing or if it is speculation. There are many that say only Mylar should be used for long-term archiving (which might be true). But wouldn't gasses from the comic still impact the comic (sealed away or not) even in Mylar?

The way I archive my entire collection, everything is pretty much sealed from air, water, and light and the environment they are in is low humidity with temps always under 70 F. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion of how I'd archive my books through facts I learned from reading about the Edgar Church Collection. I had always wanted to see evidence of a comic book collection (discovered after 30+ years) that was stored in a similar environment to mine. While the Edgar Church Collection wasn't kept air-tight (or even bagged/boarded for the most part), it was found in Colorado and the books were preserved very well without much protection from the elements at all. I figured if I were to remove the elements from my archive and storage process then it would last forever.

But I go back and forth on the whole poly vs. Mylar argument as well as the "air-tight" or some air argument. In the end, I think poly will do just fine for long-term archival if air, water, light, and heat are completely removed from the equation. But only time will tell if I've made the right decision...so I just insure the whole collection and, in 50 years, I'll find out.

Before I asked this question I conducted online research on this topic until my eyes were bleeding. I ended up deciding putting them in 2-4mm mylar flips was the best course of action. The mylar will limit exposure to outside elements, it's not airtight so the comic can still breathe, it's affordable (unlike CoinArmour product), and they look nice.

TTTHHHEEENNN, I found out they don't make them in the size I need (TMNT #1-4). Pretty frustrating journey...

What is the going rate for a TMNT #1 (first print) in cgc 9.4 & 9.6?

What is the going rate for a TMNT #1 (first print) in cgc 9.4 & 9.6?

The last sale on a 9.6 was $8,000... the last sale on a 9.4 was $5,350.

Prices are really weird on this book.

Pretty much every grade from 5.0 to 9.0 is somewhere between $2,500 and $3,500.

It's as if the only things that matter are: 1) First Print 2) Unrestored

... the actual grade seems to be a distant third.
