I think Kirby's first use of the "Thor" character was Adventure Comics 75. There is also a Thor story by Kirby in Tales of the Unexpected 16 that has some strong parallels to the Marvel version that would appear several years later. In the 50's DC was a very Editor/Writer driven company and Kirby just wasn't welcomed in the way he was comfortable with. Many concepts that later made it to Marvel with Kirby had their roots in material he produced for DC in the late 50's. Challengers of the Unknown #3 is chock full of prototype ideas. GOD BLESS...

Given the roots of the character in Norse mythology, it's no wonder there are many versions of Thor appearing in various comics before 1962. However, it is the Lee/Kirby version of JIM83 that is the first combined appearance of the character and description of a mythos that became a 50 year plus running Marvel series and an integral part of the Marvel universe.

As Jimbo has noted, Jack Kirby's flirtation with Thor predates JIM #83 by several years.
