I love this. You have great taste in art.

:acclaim:

What did he paint on? Some kind of art board? Or is it canvas? The surface looks very smooth?

I hope you didn't buy it from Theo...

He didn't! lol

Canvas backed by board. The apparent smoothness is probably result of heavy gesso used to prep the canvas before oils were applied. In places the oil paint is actually quite thick (white streak on window).

Both sooo nice Cat! If they were both priced a dime and I only had one dime I think I've give a slight edge to the Schomburg.

Id say that for subject matter the Schomburg wins, for image quality it's a pick em but the Schomburg is not a published comic cover so the Rozen is worth more.

Great pieces Cat. Would I be correct in assuming the dozen cost a little more than the schommy?

Thanks, wish I had a dozen! lol

The Rozen & Schomburg were in the same ballpark, price-wise. The Rozen cost me a bit more, I think. That's all I'll say on the subject of cost besides the fact that they were well worth what I paid. One thing I will say is that Theo wasn't an ogre to deal with, but he knew up front I'm as much about collecting as business and wasn't looking to flip the art for a profit. Eccentric, ...yeah, like you said (paraphrased), "who among us isn't?" (thumbs u

Cat, have you seen Robert Lesser's pulp cover collection in person?

He bequeathed it to the New Britain Museum of American Art. I was living in CT when they held the opening so I went. I know the collection has been exhibited at various places. It really is something to see.

No, I'd certainly love to view it. At the Windy City Pulp Show about 5 years ago I had the opportunity to see on display a sizable collection of Hubert Rogers paintings for Astounding Stories pulps (late 30's, early 40's) that was pretty awesome.

Several boardies have nice pulp art collections; I've seen some jaw dropping paintings over the years. What I'd love to see is Dwight's Shadow collection that includes two of Rozen's most striking cover paintings, but that would involve an invitation and planning around everyone's schedules to accommodate the journey.

I hesitated coming on here myself for a long time. But I have found this community to be very warm, friendly and welcoming for the most part. As long as it stays this way, I will be here. When it gets ugly, I'm gone...

You're rusty and your joints squeak! :baiting:

And yo mamma has rusty staples...

That's it! I'm quittin' the boards! :sumo:

Now who the hell is Theo Holstein again???

Here's an early Theo "outing" in Overstreet - as an advertisement:

TheoHolstein_zpsed6dd6b7.jpg

There's a certain attraction to buying and selling with this guy. Just cannot put my finger on it . . .

Even the makeup of the ad is a trip down memory lane - who remembers Letraset?

I'm trying to get it out of my mind and and there you go doing that again...

Yeah, I'm a graphic designer from way back in the day. I used to use Letraset, amberlith, rapido graph pens ect. I love the psychedelic font he used for his name!

Lol - Theo Holstein is still an old scammer.   I made an offer on a Bill Ward for $1500 from him on eBay and he messages and says $1750.   I say ok.

2 days later he says he changed his mind and he will only sell it to me for $2000 outside of eBay to avoid fees.   I say no thanks.

He then says he would never sell it for less than $25,000.  (Yes, that is not a type-o).

I say no, and he emails me regularly for weeks after trying to sell me other ...

A while later, I see another one of his Bill Wards on Hertiage... I win the bid.   Then it turns out that it was just a high-grade print under the frame, and Hertiage had to refund my money.

Oh Theo... Will you ever win?

Heritage sold you a framed print as an original? Well that sure instills confidence...hm

I’ve known Theo for ages. Never tried to buy anything from him but sold him a few things. Always a long, drawn out tough process. Almost always made me feel dirty and screwed. Hey, my choice though I guess.

That being said, I always enjoy talking to him. He is a very knowledgeable and passionate collector. Fun to talk to. But like so many long time people in this hobby, pretty weird. Something about this hobby really brings this out in so many people I guess.

I have learned to keep it short with people like this. And if I don’t like dealing with certain folks, I just don’t.

I think we need a Rogues Gallery thread for the boards starting with this unsavory group...

You really shouldn't include me in this esteemed lineup of characters. I don't have the skills these other guys have.

That’s what they all say. Your crimes against the collecting community is your willful intent to hoard every comic above the 9.0 grade...
