I love that one Marty! I always refer to it as an Action #1 homage. I know you paid a whole lot less for your copy than I did!

Here's one from the back of the box that got wet years ago.

When it comes to WOLVERTON'S art, I always thought his "LENA THE HYENA"

was terrific!

I think Wolverton won a contest for his ugly woman drawing. I find it painful to look at. I prefer his Powerhouse Pepper or Bing Bang Buster.

By the way, Noah Beery, Jr. played Buster in Howard Hawks' "Red River".

Howard also directed "The Thing", "The Big Sleep" and "Sgt. York"

...and Walter Brennan was the first "Groot".

I do like Li'l Abner. He was enormously popular back in the fifties and sixties. He even made the cover of Life Magazine. Al didn't back away from expressing his opinions about the U.S.A. But he was more conservative than the editors of Charlie.

While looking through copies of THE GREEN HORNET for house ads, this

one, an all-time favorite, popped up.

While going through my collection of HARVEY Comics I ran across the

backup stories of TOMMY TWEEN in quite a few issues.

With such a variety of titles on the newsstand to choose from, it was almost always

difficult to select the book you planned to spend your dime on. As most newsstand

operators did not allow you to flip through the book, your choice was title and what

was on the cover...along with the number of pages. Once in awhile I would stray

away from the known and select by cover alone...sometimes a good choice, other

times maybe not such a good choice. But most of the time I was pleased with my

selections. One of those that contained new characters and stories was TREASURE

COMICS #5 from 1946. It featured MARCO POLO, PAUL BUNYAN, The ARABIAN

KNIGHT and DR. STYX...my favorite, plus The TREASURE KEEPER.

Wow, it must have been fun seeing all those great covers on the newstand (an hard to choose). In those days they really sold books with great covers. Now days, not so much. I have always wondered how cool it would be to EC's on the stands. Especially books like Crime Suspenstories #20 & #21. I know you said you had to "ask" for them under the counter but I imagine in some areas they were just sitting in piles on the stands awaiting kid's dimes.

What also made it a little difficult finding your favorite titles on the newsstand

was changing the look of the cover between issues like KERRY DRAKE #5 and #6.

I have quite a few LOONEY TUNES & MERRIE MELODIES as my parents

gave me a subscription for a Christmas gift. This cover was always one of

my favorites.
