Look at this: Cerebus 8.0 @ $720 & 43 watchers. hm

Right behind an Incredible Hulk #180 9.0 with a mere 72 watchers.

Good luck b***i 393 :wishluck:

 You've lost so many of these! Link to Aug 25th, 2014 post pasted below console.gif

While the market for IH181 is acknowledged as broad, the market for Cerebus 1 is substantially smaller - since there hasn't been much posted other than what jaydog pasted from GPA I decided to take a peek at recent e-bay activity to see if I could observe a trend. I admit I've never followed this book's price before but there are not many examples to choose from so it was fairly easy to do.

What surprised me is that one particular buyer b***i (390) has tried unsuccessfully 3 times to acquire this book in the last three months - he was within spitting distance of winning the book three times. hm

What conclusions can we draw from this? Is this a guy simply trying to buy this book  or is the market for this book so limited that "market maintenance" bids are being placed by interested parties  ?!??

I guess that is up to anyone reading this to decide. (shrug)

The smaller price gap of approximately $20 between the June & August (one grade less) certified copies tells me that b***i (390) feels the book is increasing in value - so that appears to be the trend & to be fair both the winner & under bidder felt similarly about the book as our recurring bidder did in the last most recent sample.

Hopefully he wins one soon :wishluck:or puts his copies up for sale. :shy:

I'm actually upset that I somehow missed this auction. I would have been all over that. :pullhair:

Dude was in Nashville, too.

I'm interested to know from more experienced collectors what kind of premium collectors of bronze and older books shell out for white pages?

What percentage of collectors here value white pages?

Does a rare book like cerebus 1 with white pages demand a worthwhile premium or is it similar in price to same grade with lesser PQ?

Personally I'll take a little lower grade with WP over a higher grade with lower PQ. For example I held out for the right TMNT #1 second and third prints with WPs.

BTW, three years later, we have some data:

Sales of like books:

Cerebus 1 9.4: $9.000, November, 2015 (only sale ever in this grade)
Cerebus 1 9.4 signature series: $7,768, January, 2010
There has been no 9.2 sale of a Cerebus 1 reported since 2005. Last reported sale was a SS for $2,138

Incredible Hulk 181 9.4: $5,158, May, 2017 (21 sales in 9.4 in the last 12 months)
Incredible Hulk 181 9.4 quadruple signed SS (Lee, Romita, Wein, Trimpe): $4,300, August, 2013
and just for giggles
Incredible Hulk 181 9.2, $4,500, May, 2017 (bit of an outlier but a reported sale - 17 9.2s in the last 12 months)
Incredible Hulk 181 9.6: $6,528, April, 2017 (13 sales in 9.6 in the last 12 months)

Below 9.0 I'm not sure as the data is very incomplete but without question, a Cerebus 1 in 9.2 or higher will sell for more than a Hulk 181.

People are finally realizing that Hulk 180 is the actual 1st appearance of Wolverine.

181 going down, while 180 is increasing steadily.

Wait.

Not so fast.

A 9.2 Hulk 181 just sold for $4500.

$9k for a 1 of 2 top of the census copy 9.4 cerebus 1 is nothing all that great to write home about really.

Usually top of the census copies are a 9.8.  Usually the next lowest grade is 9.6.  For cerebus 1 the top is 9.4.  The second highest is then 9.2. The multiplier in value from a 9.6 to a 9.8 is usually about 2X.  If we leveled the playing field between the books based on census population (and let's face it, you are being completely disnegenous if you don't do that), we would expect a Cerberus 9.2 to have an "at best" FMV of $4500.  Do I think a 9.2 would actually sell for that ?  Hell no.  At least not without sitting a good long time.  Would one move for  $3500?  Probably.  But if it was sitting next to 10 Hulk 9.2, 181's at a convention for the same price, how many Hulk 181's would you expect would sell before that one random niche collector strolls around to look at the cerebus?   Probably all 10 of the 181s would sell first. Or at least most of them.

And whereas hulk 181 has always spanked cerebus 1 in every grade below 9.0, guess what has happened to the 9.0 181's since this thread was started?   They now sell for a comparable amount of what cerebus 1 sells for in a 9.0, and more  Meanwhile, pitifully, a 9.0 cerebus 1 SS file copy you name it, just went for $3600 in April 2017- a mere $1300 more than the last copy that sold for nearly three years ago. (and keep in mind that there are only five copies of that in that grade in SS.)

So is cerebus 1 "really" worth more than a hulk 181, even in a 9.2?

No.  Not in the real world anyway.
