Marvel film & TV rights shell game - who owns what?

Rights run out ten years after Elektra was released, same as Daredevil.

Elektra 2005 = 2015 freedom from nothingness.

:whee:

Although, there were parts of Elektra the movie I really liked. They just changed up the dark part of the story too fast, and focused on the teenage so much.

I recently read an article online that was published a couple of years ago that suggested that Silver Sable was bundled with the Spider-man rights.

Is that confirmed? Also, do we know the status of Alpha Flight and individual members?

These are good questions, as you would assume Silver Sable is tied in with Spider-Man, and Alpha Flight would be with the X-Men franchise.

hm

I'll find out what is out there.

What about Spider-Woman…given that Marvel wants a female led series/movie, do they have rights to her?

If I remember correctly, Jessica Drew has no real ties to Peter Parker and has barely crossed paths with him. But because of the similar moniker, would that force her to be in Sony's playground or can Marvel use her?

This is an interesting article about trademarks being updated.

Marvel Files New Trademarks For Alpha Flight, Black Panther, Loki, & More (Dec-2013)

---------------------

The new trademarks that Marvel filed for in downloadable electronic publications included Irredeemable Ant-Man, Journey Into Mystery, Strikeforce: Morituri, Rocket Racoon, New Warriors, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Alpha Flight, and Age of Ultron.

---------------------

Age of Ultron: Post-production movie

Ant-Man: Now becoming a movie

Guardians of the Galaxy & Rocket Raccoon: Movie

Could the rest be considered for movies as well? Some very interesting choices.

Although it doesn't prove anything either way, there was an article about the Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Mark Webb commenting on Spider-Woman.

Marc Webb Weighs In On SPIDER-WOMAN Appearing In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

She is most probably owned by Marvel once Webb digs into the details. But maybe...

It's about time for some speculation on Alpha Flight…they've gotten the raw deal for years. That #1 will finally be worth more than .50!!!!

Sounds like Marvel is building to Civil War as well as Infinity Gauntlet. The New Warriors will be the scapegoats…as they are in the comic. And they'll probably use Alpha Flight as either a "Canadian superhero team that doesn't have to register" or A registered super team in Canada…even though the US registration does not pertain to them".

Man-Thing movie rights details.

How did Man-Thing end up at Lionsgate?

Lionsgate produced a film back in 2005 that went direct to TV, which was shown on the SciFi (SYFY) Channel.

10Man-Thing_r1_scan.jpg

So if this is following the ten-year contract pattern that was identied with other characters, by 2015 this would default back to Marvel Studios. But then you have to be careful, as sometimes a studio may have the movie rights to a character or franchise, while Marvel retains TV and animation rights.

Man-Thing or a related character has been mentioned twice now in a Marvel property. In 'Iron Man 3', Ellen Brandt is the character injected with the Extremis Virus. Ellen Brandt is the ex-wife of Dr. Ted Sallis, otherwise known as Man-Thing. Then 'Man-Thing' is mentioned on the SHIELD TV show. So it was assumed all of the rights had returned to Marvel.

If Marvel is looking to have a horror production division, I think Man-Thing would make a lot of sense as one of the characters. TBD if it has all of the rights back to the character.

Isn't Elektra back with Marvel?

Marvel was even unsure at the time of the Daredevil rights recovery. If it is a ten-year rights contract, and the last Elektra movie was 2005, then 2015 would lead to her returning back to Marvel.

Wow! I thought this mess was behind them.

Companies continue battle for Marvel superheroes

----------------

Stan Lee Media, which is no longer affiliated with comic book writer Stan Lee, appealed the judge's order. Disney has argued that other courts have already ruled against Stan Lee Media on the same matter.

The appeal is the latest turn in a court battle between the companies that has spanned more than a decade.

Stan Lee Media has sued Marvel and others over the characters' copyrights in at least six cases, all of which have been dismissed, according to court documents. In 2012, it sued Disney in federal court in Denver for the $5.5 billion it said Disney earned from movies and merchandise involving Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Fantastic Four and other characters.

----------------

Even Stan Lee must cringe every time he hears of this company using his name.
