Ran across this while sorting through my collection and being Saturday

made me remember the fun that it was to visit the newsstand on Bloomfield

Avenue every Saturday and pick up one or two comics, depending on how I

had done delivering groceries from the A&P Market. I would take my wagon and

wait outside the market with four or five other kids for people who had large bags

of groceries and ask them if they needed help getting them home. The going rate

was 10 cents. As soon as I got 40 or 50 cents I was off to the newsstand. I only

needed 17 cents for the afternoon movie and 5 cents for candy...the rest went to

comics.

Nice book and great story!

Agreed. It's those kind of memories that make this hobby so special.

Great story and a cool cover I have never seen.

Loved the story, and I also have not seen that book before.

Your story reminded me of my younger days going to the corner store with 20 cents and buying a pop ( 5 cents ) and a comic ( 15 cent cover price ).

Thanks for sharing your story! In checking, there's only 18 Graded copies of DETECTIVE #129 in the census.

With all the movies being made based on Comic Book Characters, it made me

remember sitting on the front stoop with Joey Barone reading each others

comic books and talking about what Superhero we would like to see in the next

serial ...we had already seen CAPTAIN AMERICA, CAPTAIN MARVEL, BATMAN

and the PHANTOM...but what about the HUMAN TORCH.

As I remember, these titles were very difficult to find on the newsstand.

Received a very nice plaque from CGC today for "Best Forumite 2014"...truly a nice

gesture for doing something I thoroughly enjoy.

Wow! It took a while but I finally got through this thread. It is awesome!!!!

Marty, were there any particular comics that you wanted from the newsstands but when you returned with enough money you could not find them anymore?

Thanks for the kind words and for spending the time reading through this thread!

As for missing out on issues that I wanted, I would say that the hardest for me to

get were "4-COLORS"...they never seemed to be on the newsstand...I could only

find them at the Downtown W.T. Grants which I wasn't able too do too often and when I

did, never had enough money to get all that I wanted.

As for others that I missed out on getting due to "lack of funds" were ALL WINNERS

and the 15-centers like COMIC CAVALCADE and WORLD'S FINEST.

Thanks again for your interest!

You probably missed out on a lot of these if you couldn't find four colors. Fortunately they have all been reprinted so many times that you can read the stories without breaking the bank.

Here's one I haven't looked at for years. It's really a fun book with "THE FOOL",

"THE SPORTSMASTER" and "KNODAR...The Last CRIMINAL on EARTH!"...

three good stories.
