Amazing Spider-Man Collecting Thread!

Well it's time to check in on the HG Spidey Census and see what has transpired since January 2012...that's roughly 18 months folks! My intent is to show the toughest books by comparison of CGC graded books available in HG (high grade).

Sorry for the crappy presentation of the numbers (Sckao help!!!!). The columns read as follows:

Issue-9.8-9.6-9.4-9.2-9.0-total issues

The numbers are what they are less the usual margin for error what with re-subs and labels not being retired. Points of interest are as follows:

Interestingly the top 5 and the bottom 5 remain the same...although #11 opens a significant lead over #1 from a 1 issue margin to an 8 issue margin...all true ASM-aficionados know that issue 11 is the bane of HG collectors for their ASM sets... :insane::frustrated:

There was no change in the issues for the Top 10. Just some rearranging for spots 6-10...no change either in issues 11-15 except rearrangement... hm

Interestingly as well is 20 issues held their position in the Top 50! :o

Issue 17 gets top honors for rising from 23rd toughest to 17th toughest!

Issue 50 represents the book that dropped the most, or said another way, created more HG issues that made it more readily available in HG than in 2012 going from 38th toughest to 42nd toughest...this probably has a bit to do that it would be a much more submitted book than many others... :preach:

Issue 19 remains the only issue in the ASM 1-50 run with a single 9.9 grade. ^^

Issues 47 and 33 (warehouse find) were the only issues in 2012 recording with double-digit issues in 9.8...4 issues presently have double-digit copies in 9.8 or better...19, 33, 45 and 47.

There were 6 issues in 2012 recording without a 9.8 (i.e., highest grade was 9.6)...4, 7, 9, 11 14 and 28. Five of those remain with issue 9 scoring a single 9.8...who has the single 9.8 :o !!

TOTALs statistics...1038 issues were added to the Census in the last 18 months...only 25 new 9.8s so a little over 1 per month...142 9.6...182 9.4...237 9.2 and 452 in 9.0...

Rock the Spidey...I am analyzing the data a little further and will comment accordingly...on vacation this week so my next report may not be for a week or so...enjoy... :headbang:

I said this right in my narrative re. roughly 18 months time difference/timeline but I had the date listed as 1/20/2012 when in fact it should have read 1/20/2013. doh!

First time posting in this thread (I think). I received an ASM #2 today which I bought from a cool boardie, nearly completing my run of single digit Spideys (along with #11-441)! This run has been about a 20-year effort, started as a young teen in the mid-90s, with a maybe-ten year break in between. :screwy: I decided last year I didn't really care to collect 442-700 so I sold off what I had and put it towards filling some earlier holes. All are raw in my collection besides #2, 3 and 129.

Now..on to #1...but before that..a better camera :boo:

Great post! I'd love to have all of those comics, but mostly have Spider-Man issues from 1971 onward, with a handful prior to those thrown in. Luckily Marvel Tales and Essential Spider-Man fills in the holes.

But why did you get rid of the issues after 441? Just curious. I'm new to this board and have recently been reading Spider-Man from the very beginning. I've not reached those issues yet (I'm just finishing up the 80's).

I've heard some bad things about Marvel in the 90s and am a little worried I won't like them.

#441 is the final issue in the original ASM run before they started renumbering.

It's a very easy place to stop because of the renumbering, I haven't bought anything past #441 for my collection either.

I know some people out there will think I am crazy for saying this, but for me there is no point in collecting anything beyond McFarlane's run on ASM.

Carnage? (shrug) (note I'm not trying to muddy the SA thread with too much Copper, just answering the question asked...)

It depends on the titles. The first titles to be ruined by Marvel were the mutant ones, Spider-Man in fact is among the less quickly ravaged, but surely they messed it up with J.M. Straczynski and afterwards, not to mention "One more day" where it does not only become offensive (as "Sins Past" was) but totally nonsensical, giving Mephisto almost "godlike" powers.

The "1990s style" clone stories were also pushed beyond limits of decency, but always less offending than the following.

Here and there you could still read acceptable Spidey stories, until a few years ago – not so with the mutants and other titles.

Is there really anything between 328 and 441 that you need to own? I am not saying there's nothing worth reading, I am saying that in my opinion there's not really anything worth collecting in the last 25 years. Yes, the first appearance of Carnage might be the exception. Still, that leaves the last 23 years. I guess I'm just old school.

I was just joking around. I wanted to be one of the people that you thought would think you were crazy... if that makes sense.

But to answer your question, no, I don't need to own anything between 328 and 441. I don't need to own anything prior to 328 either. I just want to. There was a lot of good stuff in that 100+ issues, at least, that's how I choose to remember it. :)

As an example, the death of Aunt May in #400 was a great story. Too bad they ruined it by bringing her back.
