Do full length animated feature films count if they were released in the theaters?

 

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Since it was animated and not live, no. When accounting for this movie in theaters as a cinema release, yes (which I have in the DC-Marvel movie history thread).

 

But great recommendation.

However, Buck Rogers started in the pulps ("Amazing Stories") and only later became a comic strip.

 

The Shadow definitely does not belong on the list... based entirely on the long-running pulp magazine (which in turn was inspired by a radio show).

 

Barbarella is a 1968 French-Italian science fiction film based on Jean-Claude Forest's French Barbarella comics.

Danger: Diabolik (Italian: Diabolik) is a 1968 Italian-French action film directed by Mario Bava based on the Italian comic character Diabolik.

With the Shadow recommendation, I lean towards keeping it as at the time of production (1994) the comic strips from 1940 on and comics from the 1970's and 1980's had been out on the market. And with Kaluta being recognized for his work on The Shadow from the Bronze Age series, the character was already in the mind of loyal fans.

Sparks is a 2013 American independent action thriller film based on the graphic novel written by Christopher Folino and designed by JM Ringuet and Tyler Endicott turned into a superhero noir.

I'm not desperate for titles, but I really enjoyed this big budget Luc Besson-directed French adaptation of the Jaques Tardi graphic novels.

I even own it in my comic movie section. Louise Bourgoin is gorgeous as the titular heroine and the last half hour is a riot!

Target was the only mainstream store (I knew of) carrying these.

There were two Li'l Abner films. One made in 1940 by RKO and the other a musical adapted from the Broadway play, made in 1959 by Paramount.

 

There was also a 30 minute Li'l Abner TV pilot which only aired once on NBC in 1967.

How about The Greatest American Hero? While not based on a comic, the concept of any superhero TV show has to be traced back to a comic book influence of some kind.
I just finished "The Greatest American Heroine", the spin-off to The Greatest American Hero.

I figured I would mention it. Since the cast returned for this unaired pilot. New hero, Mary Ellen Stuart looks great in her suit fighting with her cape (wish they kept the "skirt" Ralph wore for three seasons though). I think what marred this one-shot was there was no baddies to contend with. Should have been a two hour event, like when GAH first premiered.
