Jill,

here's a bird's eye view of your grandfather's career as much as this stuff is known.

More detailed information can probably be retrieved from www.comics.org but that takes a little more finesse. If you so desire, I can help you and create a better formatted list for your use. When I have time I'll look up a couple of resources not available online to see what nuggets about his career we can turn up but unfortunately as many in the field, we know little about his personal life. Are there any information you can provide to us. You see what we do not even know when and where he died so any new info would be fantastic.

Thanks for the list of comics and alias names for Allen Ulmer. I am his granddaughter and I have just begun to look up his work. It has not been an easy task. We don't have any of his comics, my grandmother got rid of all of them many years ago. Such a shame, but I guess they both had their reasons for not holding onto things. Other than looking up his name online, do you have any other suggestions. I am very new to the comic world and I would love to be able to acquire some of his work. Are there any popular conventions, etc.? I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks again for already doing some of the legwork for me :) His one alias, WILMER MUDDLESHTUNK, was definitely in honor of his favorite movie. I can remember him watching The Maltese Falcon many times :)

Thanks again and I hope to hear from you soon

Jill

Jerry Bail's Who's Who in Comics is a good source for artists histories. You can also try the Grand Comics Database. Both have a lot of interesting information. Searching may require a couple attempts but don't give up. Alter-Ego publishes a lot of articles about golden age comics. If you have any old family photos, Roy Thomas would be interested in publishing them. Original art usually ends up on ebay or at a Heritage auction. Please keep in contact and post photos you can find. I will see what else I can dig up.

Local conventions are held in most large cities. The biggest comic convention is in San Diego and another is in NYC. The Baltimore and Philadelphia conventions are large too. I haven't been to any of the other conventions but you can usually find information at your local comic shop.
