Neeidea
Ok, here is the current list of known Miracleman #1 "Gold" variants (from the Miracleman thread). These were from the initial print run and were numbered out of 400 and sold at the San Diego Comic Con in 1985. Each was individually signed by Alan Moore and each came with a certificate of authenticity that included the number and, in some cases, has a comic shop noted on the certificate (some were given out by the shops as prizes at the comic con): More info here: Miracleman Gold - recalledcomics Miracleman Gold - 4ColorHeroes Key:- [ ]=comic shop/prize winner noted on certificate; blank=none The List 002 [blank] 011 Featured on front page of Comic Buyers Guide #1535 [Looks blank but small pic] 040 Previously sold by mycomicshop.com [blank] 055 CB-CS graded at 9.6 v.s, owned by Tropean (previously PGX 9.8) [blank] 057 Featured on fourcolorheroes.com [blank] 090 CGC graded at 9.4 #0759595004 [blank] 113 [blank] 116 [blank] 117 CGC graded at 9.6 #0979887001 122 Sold on ebay by comicopolis [blank] 123 CGC graded at 9.0 #0714931001 [American Comics, Daniel Gus 2/14/86] 124 Sold on ebay by comicopolis [blank] 128 Sold on ebay by comicopolis [blank]; note: for sale at same time as one below: 128 Questionable PGX copy, may not be numbered inside [blank]; mschmidt: "It's 100% a fake". 131 Sold on ebay by comicopolis [blank] 134 CGC graded at 9.8 #0198245001 originally from ebay/comicopolis raw; previously owned by woregul [blank] 136 Sold on ebay (comicopolis) circa mid May 2014 [blank] 137 Sold on ebay (sagacitynow) circa mid October 2014 [blank, James Morrison Franco 8-4-85] 139 Owned by woregul; purchased from ebay/comicopolis [blank] 141 CGC graded at 9.8 #0192301002; owned by mschmidt 155 [blank] 161 Sold on ebay (comicopolis) circa early May 2014 [sunrise Comics] 162 Owned by mschmidt, purchased from mycomicshop.com [blank] 169 Owned by kapzilla, original purchase from ebay (comicopolis) [blank] 178 Sold by comicopolis on ebay 2014-03-31 [blank] 179 [sunrise Comics] 181 CGC graded at 9.6 #1006822002 [blank] 182 CGC graded at 9.6 #1000183001 184 CGC graded at 9.8 #1006822001 [blank] 185 CGC graded at 9.8 [sunrise Comics] 187 CGC graded at 9.8 #0186693003 originally from ebay, comicopolis raw [blank] 188 Featured on 4colorheroes.com [sunrise Comics] 190 Owned by mschmidt [blank] 191 CGC graded at 9.2 #1006822003 [sunrise Comics] 214 Sold on on ebay 2014-07-10; now owned by JollyComics [blank] 215 For sale via mycomicshop.com circa July 2014 [sunrise Comics] 217 CGC graded at 9.6 #0750997011 226 CGC graded at 9.8 [blank] 242 CGC graded at 9.4 #1035897001 [sunrise Comics] 251 Sold on eBay October 3rd 2014 [sunrise Comics, the Fortune Bookie, 8-4-85 John Franco] 261 CB-CS graded at 9.4 #0001066-AA-001 [unknown] 268 [blank] 271 [blank] 298 Sold on ebay by mycomicshop.com [blank] 315 CGC graded at 9.6 #1056931007 [blank] 322 Sold on ebay by mycomicshop.com 353 For sale on ebay in the UK [sunrise Comics, Mathew A? 8/3/85] 359 CGC graded at 9.4 #0747447001 (previously owned by woregul) 360 Pictured in Overstreet [American Comics, Ray Johnson 9/30/85] 385 CGC graded at 9.4 #0214635002 [The Best of Two Worlds] 391 [Fact, Fiction & Fantasy] 394 [Fact, Fiction & Fantasy, Becky Denn 8/3/85] Total to date: 51 (>10%!) B-Smooth
That's a great list! Must have taken a while to gather all of that?
Neeidea
I don't actually own one myself but I had been keeping track of them, one day I might actually buy one The original list is a merged list from myself, mschmidt and EwanUK - it seems we were all keeping track of these separately (we are all afflicted with Miracleman O.C.D.!). Ryan.
These seem to be coming out of the woordwork lately.
B-Smooth
These look like they could easily be faked. Am I correct?
Ryan.
I would think so. Perhaps it'd be best to stick to already-slabbed copies when reliable provenance can't be established.
Santos208
Any idea how much they sell for in 9.8s? I know of an 8.5 slabbed copy, but if $600!

They slab the books with the certificate in it? I didn't think they'd do that unless it's attached?
Ryan.
The certificate would not be slabbed. The number and Moore's name are notated on the label.

Santos208
The certificate should be slabbed, at least the one I saw, the comic is slabbed and the certificate is in the back inside the slab, visible to see.

Picture/scan? That's something I'd like to see.

The certificate is not slabbed. It's likely that the certificate was inside the slab sleeve.

CGC will not slab any certificates inside the case. For this one: "128 Questionable PGX copy, may not be numbered inside [blank]" It's 100% a fake. I spoke to comicopolis (who were selling a raw #128 copy) and they bought it straight from one of the dealers that were involved in the original signing - theirs is the real copy. It's one of the few books where I'd actually advise people to buy it raw, so you can inspect both the signature & the numbering on the first page ... kapzilla
Two questions: 1) Is comicopolis on ebay a trustworthy source for these, as they've seemed to have quite a few over last last few months, including a blue edition? 2) What are the tell-tale signs of real/fake copies of the gold? Neeidea
Just added #214 (#136 and #161 added a while back). The count thus far is now 48! Two questions: 1) Is comicopolis on ebay a trustworthy source for these, as they've seemed to have quite a few over last last few months, including a blue edition? mschmidt was in contact with him earlier; comicopolis apparently bought a number of them from the one of the dealers involved in the signing back in 1985. I have also had some correspondence with comicopolis and he seems legitimate but others who know him may be able to comment further. : 2) What are the tell-tale signs of real/fake copies of the gold? Check the links at the start of the thread for more info and pictures as a starting point. Check the certificate looks like the others, check Moore's signature and the number matches the one on the certificate. Cross check against the number here to see if it matches up. Also post the picture here so others can comment as well (I have photos of over 30 of them we can compare to).
