Ale Garza Commissions

Not sure exactly where to put this. But has anyone been stiffed by Ale Garza?

I've read stories how he takes a really long time to do commissions. He wants the money right away but then gives the run around when the commission will be done.

I've heard he gotten better but I don't think that's true.

I gave him money through paypal back in September for two commissions. Kept going back and forth when it will be done and how busy his is. But if you're busy then why take the money?

He started showing off one of the commissions I asked for on his facebook page. Then I was told that week that he'd ship the commissions out. Then there was no more replies from him. That was three weeks ago. He took my money and I have nothing to show for it.

Paypal has a 45 day limit to file a claim.

What should happen from here?

Ive dealt with Ale before. Ive heard a few of the same things before. I wanted to do a recreation of x-men 500 cover, and for him to do the layout and a character. I paid up front, and I asked it to be ready for NYCC. I reached to him in July, and it was pretty much done in sept. His art rep, Mike, was able to hand it to me in NY

You're lucky it was only three months. I would of rather of paid him directly at a show. But he doesn't know until last minutes if he's going to a show.

His wife was helping him out. I was emailing her. Then a few week ago she said they'll ship out on the Thursday of that week. I replied back to her twice since then and she she hasn't replied.

They make me feel like I shouldn't of ever given them any money..

I've never done anything with Ale before. But I have waited for six months for artists to email me back. It sucks, but happens.

I don't think I have ever had a artist stiff me though, but some have taken years lol

Whatever happens, I wish you the best! Good luck!

The longest I ever waited for an artist was one week. But Ale just takes too long.

They way he is, I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. I even asked for a refund before from him and he said he couldn't do that.

I've been waiting well over a year for a paid for Ale Garza commission.

I asked him for a refund about 5 months ago and he said he doesn't do refunds.

I told him at one point I didn't want the commission any more and he has been holding my money for a year, why not refund me? And he still insisted he doesn't do refunds.

I asked him if he would do my commission for SDCC and I'll have a friend pick it up. He said "sure" and my friend went to get it and he didn't have it.

I emailed him afterwards and he said he would get right to it - but that has been how long now?

I'm out $300 - which is more than I typically pay for artists commissions - but he kinda talked me in to spending more for something nice. :/

I doubt I'll ever see this art or my money.

I am sorry that you are waiting and I am sure things will work out.

Unfortunately I am still waiting for some color commissions from Moose Baumann from March 2011...we staid in constant contact until about a year ago where he stopped replying to emails...I read that his wife had some medical issues so I let it sit for another 6 months...I contacted him again a few weeks ago via email and deviant art(where he has been selling prints and taking commissions) at this point I just want the art back and he can keep the money lol still no reply but I haven't given up yet, I probably should but that's not me :)

I've been lucky with artists so far, however I've never dealt with Ale Garza. In most cases I've either not paid anything upfront or paid a small non-refundable deposit, 10-15%.

A small non-refundable deposit shows the artist you are serious, but also lets the artist realize they have to finish the work if they want the rest. In the event of paying nothing upfront the artist knows it's entirely up to them to deliver, and if the client gets tired of waiting, they can sell the completed piece with no guilt.

For artists I dealt with successfully multiple times in the past, I don't mind paying upfront.

I've always had good experiences with Ale Garza, whether at conventions or through emails and via online.

Here's artwork from my CAF gallery of some of the stuff he's done for me through the years:

Most recently, just done last month... Claire from "Heroes": http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=965021&GSub=64442

I've been getting artwork from Ale Garza since 2004, first starting off getting free sketches, then collecting commissions, so it's been 8 years of reliable work.

Like any artist, he's a perfectionist who has pride in his craft, so once in a while it takes longer to render than anticipated, but only in the name of quality.

He often draws free sketches for myself and other fans at the shows, and even, after finding out it was my birthday, drew this for me as a free gift back in 2010 at a convention: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=624544&GSub=25918

...he's currently working on a Spider-Man's Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy piece for me (I'll post this one on CAF soon).

If you notice, his commissions are continually getting more refined, with strong attention to detail, often using grey wash tones, inking over his pencils, using colored paper, adding effects and background treatment and rather than stoic poses, he musters up some creative and imaginative poses to bring the characters more to life.

He's reachable via email and at shows, as he's a frequent guest of many comic conventions.

My experiences varies, and sometimes like fine wine, the longer I waited, the better the rendering, but never longer than my patience can tolerate and he's always responded to emails and has never forgotten about his obligations, so has professional honor and integrity.

A lot of times I was able to get them "same day" (or during the weekend) of a comic convention at the show. My favorite one was a deal that he and Alex Sinclair had where he drew and Alex colored, and I was able to get my piece the same day. Other times, when getting commissions requested online via email, I quite frankly wasn't in any hurry and just mentioned the next show I'd be going to and meet him there to pick up the art, usually a few months out. I'm not a fan of the mail system, so it's nicer to see him and pick it up in person. PLUS, he often totes a stack of original artwork priced affordable for panel pages, many under $100 and even some for $40, so that's an added bonus to attending conventions for the opportunity to get great deals.

I saw him do a stellar "Thor" on colored paper last year at Wonder Con in Anaheim that was for another fan. He does great work at the shows. He's one of those in-demand artists you should contact in advance of a show to set-up commissions or if attending the show, come early and get on the list.

How long did you have to wait once you've paid until you've received from him?

...and here's the link to the completed commission I'd mentioned of Spider-Man's MARY JANE and GWEN STACY penciled and inked by Ale Garza he did for me right after the New Year, I think he completed it within about 2 days. I know as an artist, as most artists, he has to get the right motivation and inspiration to turn out creative pieces, but once the layouts are done, barring commitments to publishers for deadlines, it's a fairly quick process from layouts to completion.

I just re read this thread.

I was talking to his art rep over the phone about possibly doing a sketch opp. What's the general consensus then?

He takes too long? He doesn't do refunds?

Don't do one????
