I sent a small donation in memory of a friend who went thru similar circumstances.
He and his girlfriend were raising two children from his failed marraige when he was killed. His ex-wife got his insurance money and his parents tried to take the kids away from her. It all worked out in the end, but it was rough going for almost a year.
I'd suggest you try doing a fundraiser at a local bar. Many of them have packages set up for these sort of things. His friends come and pay a door charge of $25-$50 and the bar throws in an hour or two of open bar and a spread. The split is usually 50-50 but then you hit the bar for a donation. If thirty or forty of their friends show up, you'll be pretty close to your goal.
