The Olympics get underway in less than three weeks! The final grouping of teams for the men's basketball competition has now been announced:

Group A

Argentina
France
Lithuania
Nigeria
Tunisia
U.S.A.

Group B

Australia
Brazil
China
Great Britain
Russia
Spain

So we'll definitely get to see another battle between the United States and Lietuva!

I love the Olympics. It's innate with me though probably.

I have mixed feelings about pro players in the competitions.

On one hand I see it as a showcasing of the amateur talent that each country has to offer and on the other I see it as each country showcasing the best of what they have available.

I lean more towards the latter.

Just far far too long without a custom title. Really. Seriously now. 2002?

If countries aren't putting their best athletes into competition, it doesn't seem as epic as if they are. Pro versus amateur shouldn't matter--it should be the best, period.

That's why I lean more towards the Pro side. There was a time when you didn't have "pros" though. (Pre-1986) but then again you have to define what "professional" really is as other Countries have professionals in different sports that some in this Country are still trying to figure out if the event really is a sport or not. (Table Tennis and Curling come to mind)

Never the less, I am a purist as well and I enjoy the idea of only amateurs. There's a finer line between what is amateur and what is pro these days though.

Regardless of any of this, I always enjoy the Olympics but less so in the last few outings because NBC seems to care more about biographies rather than actually airing all the events.

I can't stand how the Olympics are broadcast; tape delayed, edited out the yin yang, and worst of all, the background stories that lead you along as to who they want you to root for. I hate it so much that I just don't watch anymore.

Just show it all and show it live, add two dedicated Olympic cable channels for the duration and let it flow.

Exactly! They did this for a full rotation Summer/Winter and I didn't sleep for two weeks straight it seemed because I was watching it live on 3 different channels. Now all we get are highlights of BS in the "prime time".

I think it was the year that Summer was in Australia. I can't remember.

I can't stand how the prime time broadcasts are aimed at women, because the broadcasters and advertisers know men are going to watch anyways because it's the Olympics. During the summer games, it's wall to wall gymnastics during prime time, and during the winter games it's wall to wall figure skating.

I'm not much of a fan these days. My favorite part is the Closing Ceremony.
I honestly don't care if a guy from Jamaica outruns an American in the 100 meter dash, or if someone from California outduels a Bulgarian in some obscure sport no one cares about. Does anyone care that the US will be defending its Rugby title, some eighty years after they won it, in the 2016 Games?.
