An uninformed guess:
Seller agrees to buy it from HA and puts 10% down.
HA gets $85K and puts out a big news release.
Seller pulls out and loses $85K, and HA says, "what the heck, we've already got $85K, and GAs are hot in auction, let's just seller 'er."
(They like to say " 'er " at HA.)

Maybe someone just wants a $200k loss to write off against their taxes this year? 
I don't see this ending well for the consignor, assuming they actually shelled out $850k for the book. I'm sure there is more to the story here then we know.
