Saves are awarded by the Offical Scorer. I recall a time many years back when Sparky Lyle was neck in neck for the Fireman of The Year award and came into a game in the seventh with the Yankees up by about ten runs. He didn't pitch all that well, and the yankees won by five or six. Stan Lang(sp?) decided not to give him a save even though he could have and Lyle exploded. He went after Lang twice in the clubhouse in the following days. Think how much the game has changed. A closer( that term didn't yet exist) pitching three innings in a romp. Back then, Lyle and then Gossage often pitched more than two innings a game. Lyle averaged two innings an appearence during his Yankee career.

Yeah, you can be up 85 runs but as long as you pitch the last three (or more) innings, you can get a save. Wow, you learn something new everyday.
Someone got a save in that 30-3 Texas win some years back, IIRC.

I'm no fan of the Yankees, but there was an interesting story with their catcher, Martin, and home plate umpire, Diaz.
Apparently the two were arguing about pitches, so Diaz refused to let Martin throw balls back to the pitcher after there were fouled off balls. And get this, the ump said "throwing balls back is a right and you don't deserve it."
I have to laugh at umpires thinking they are why fans watch the game. And the umpiring has been pretty crappy this year (in all sports really).

I`m most surprised that it`s the first no-hitter in Mets history.

I`m most surprised that it`s the first no-hitter in Mets history. If only the Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi trade hadn't happened.
