Here is a 1942 D Mercury Dime. Is this machine doubling or a doubled die? I have linked to the photos because of size. The thing that throws me is the two in the date. Where most other areas of doubling are "shadowed", the middle of the two is very different.

For this one click on the picture of the coin for a really large photo of the entire coin. Doubling is on some of the letters but not all, and the last two digits of the date.

That's a gynormous image and clear, you got that part down. What you have here is a north and south ejection doubling. Usually this sort of doubling happens more east, west on the lettering and numbers, but that is basically all you have here. The 2 is just a bit distorted from die wear and post mint circulation wear.

Just for the record, NGC uses the term Strike Doubling exclusively, but all the terms mentioned are referring to the same effect. It's very common on early Buffalo Nickels and the lower third of Mercury Dimes, but it can be found on any coin type.
