i realize the obvious answer is "Both". but if you were to pick one or the other, which would it be?

Direct. Looks nicer than the bar code, and there is sometimes original art in the UPC box.

Newsstand copies mostly went into spinner racks so they can be harder to find in good condition, I don't think they'd be more rare til after the point in the 90's where everything had a barcode, anyway.
