Peace Dollars are a tough coin to grade.

The obverse doesn't show any "wear". Did you, perhaps, mean weak strike?

The strike was good. I was looking at the horizontal bands of hair.. Right at the roots was worn as well the hair that runs vertical to the head.. the hair line going verticle was also worn.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an "EXPERT".. I am just expressing my opinion... which most people wont like.

There is definitely no wear i the location you described, just mushy design details.

I don't understand how you can be of the opinion that the coin has areas of wear, and at the same time, you grade it MS64. If it has obvious wear, it should grade less than MS60, the lowest unc. grade.

Regardless, you are confusing weak strike for wear, and many uncirculated Peace Dollars are more weakly struck than that one.

I agree with Mark Feld's analysis. The same dilemma applies to Morgan's and in particular New Orleans minted coins. If I understand correctly, the die spacing was a little further apart at New Orleans to extend the life of the dies. This is particularly noticeable in the hair above the ear. Notice the hair detail on my MS-65 PL 1885-O Morgan Dollar above the ear is apparently worn flat at the highest point of the relief. Rather than wear this is evidence of the metal not flowing into the deepest recesses of the die.

I said 63, but to be honest, I think I have seen this coin somewhere else. I just can't remember the grade. I could also be wrong...

ANSWER: "The safest approach is to avoid discussing the topic of future collectability with these individuals: first, they know more than anyone else; second, they are deaf to any opinion that does not agree with their own; third, they are misguided optimists, assuming past practice could not possibly apply in their case."

TOTAL NEWBIE, makes no sense and seems very paradoxical and counter-intuitive.

Is it a very lame attempt at sarcastic humor??

Who graded this coin if you don't mind me asking?

NGC, I know this coin looks closer to 64 IMHO. There seems to be a little bit too much contact mark chatter on Miss Liberty's cheek and in the field directly in front of her face. Otherwise the coin does have a proof like surface that I agree with NGC is not cameo.

Kenneth - I HIGHLY recommend you read the series of articles linked in my signature. I'm not sure if you are just being lazy with your terminology, or have a lack of understanding about this - but saying a coin has wear and then giving it an Uncirculated grade is fundamentally wrong.

The beauty of the Peace dollar design is a young Teresa de Francisci modeled for it. Now imagine Mrs. Anthony de Francisci in an evening gown with huge WWF type tribal band bicep tattoos... Quite distracting right hm

Anyhow that's just my taste on this sort of toning... Which doesn't really mean much as if we all shared that same exact taste baskin robbins wouldn't offer 31 flavors ;\)

How do you feel about 'tab toning' on some Commemorative issues?
