This might be a stupid question, but do retailers have to pay for the free comics for FCBD? Yes. They also pay for the banners, bags, etc, everything. It can actually get very expensive for a LCS.

wow but does it pay off in terms of new long term customers? or the days sales? i would think 2000 is a hefty investment for a day that isnt new comic day

I would think about listing each seperately with a starting bid of 99 cents. After listing fees, pp fees, your time and effort, gas to the Post Office, bags and boards (if you want to put them in bags and boards), packaging tape et al. You should be able to break even or at least make near $1.00 an issue...
 w/ any luck you'll lose $
After 30 minutes I put them all online.

I always thought of it more as an advertising cost.
I know the stores around here do a killing on fcbd, but whether it turns a Profit that day or not I have no idea.
I do know many people who have gone to a store on fcbd and got sold on some monthlies or trades that they continue to read.
Gator or one of the other shop owners would know better than me.
