My first slabs were bought as a pair from EBay .. 'The Ultimates' Vol.1, #1 & #2. Both 9.8's. Long gone now.
I've "still" got to submit some raws, which will either be my Modern 'Captain America' variants, or (save up a bit more money) my Silver Age 'Avengers', starting from #1.
I bought my first one on eBay -- Bobby Benson's B-Bar-B Riders 14 in 8.0. Great bondage cover BTW.
Then decided I liked the way the slab presented the book, and now I'm poverty stricken!
gozer --------- This is his fife, upon which he sounded the sweet note of freedom. And his hatchet, with which he hacked at the chains of oppressions. And his ... chamber pot.

Looking for slabbed Gold Key Magnus, issues 1 to 10.
It's been a while, but I believe my first CGC book was Wolverine v1 (Limited Series) #1, 9.4, Off-White pages, from Ebay. That was before I knew that Off-White pages on a Copper book were not desirable.
The first slabs I bought were Incredible Hulk #161 CGC 6.0, and Rai #0 CGC 8.5. Both junky slabs and I accidentally cracked them both, but I loved them. Both are now raw in my collection.
First slab purchase: Daredevil #158 (9.0) off eBay. he best thing about that purchase is it lead me to these boards.
First submission (with 3 express coupons from CS membership): Hulk #181 Silver Surfer #14 ASM #238
The thing I would've changed back them (and this is just a general comment, not just about slabs), is I should've focused more on quality and less on quantity. I was buying everything that caught my eye. I had some cool books, but I wish I had spent that money exclusively on Keys.
My first B'more Con was great. I probably spent close to $1000 or so. I got a bunch of nice books (Fury's, Xmen, Spideys, Cap, etc..). If I were doing it today, I probably would walk out of the show with one or two books instead of 20.
