Here are 2 pics of another CGC case from my collection that has the questionable material.

The pics in my original post (CGC case 1) and these 2 additional pics (CGC case 2) are the most noticeable examples from my collection, and they are from 2 different sellers at different dates. After examining more and more of my collection I see that many of the CGC cases seem to have this material but to a much less noticeable extent, in some cases its only noticeable under very very close inspection (unlike the examples in the pics where the material is obvious and can be physically felt if you run over finger over the edge of the case).

Ok I posted on the "ask CGC" forum. I got a message that it wont be posted until reviewed and approved by a moderator. As soon as its on the forum, Ill add the link to this thread so that their findings can be seen by anyone else who wants to know the answer. I

Im REALLY hoping this not tampering because if it is then I've been burned by numerous different sellers over a period of about a year. So if it is tampering then this is a pretty widespread practice.

What tipped me off is that I just got one which was really noticeable. After reviewing the rest of my collection , I found another really noticeable example, and also that many of my CGC cases do have the same material but in very tiny amounts. For the one I just got that is really noticeable, I already notified the seller that im asking CGC about it. The CGC graders notes show the graded date as 4/09/2012 and since I bought the item on 4/26/2012 then if it was tampered and/or swapped then the person I bought it from may be the culprit.

Update, even though CGC has yet to post my submission to the "ASK CGC" forum, they did respond to the email I submitted via cgccomics.com/contact. The good news is that after reviewing the pictures via the URL links, their initial feeling is that the material in question is a naturally occuring defect that can occur during the sonic sealing process.

This was my initial thought as well, and to have CGC say that is really good news. But of course I wanted to be certain. In the email response, CGC does say that although they feel it is a naturally occuring defect, that its impossible to be 100% certain from pics alone. So my next step will be to mail the case to them for inspection.

I'll provide another update once I get more feedback from CGC.

Man if it were me I would pop one open, send it in to get graded and see what happens. It might be a good test of many levels.....

On a side note, I just got an order in from comiclink auctions, four more CGC graded items to add to my collection. All four cases have a weird looking corner with that material, in fact one of the cases has it on 2 corners and its just as obvious as in the pics i posted at the start of this thread.
So now that I have some cases from a trusted source that exhibit the same characteristics, I am feeling more and more confident that this is a naturally occurring defect.

It's still strange that I am noticing it more and more on these new incoming orders and not so much on older orders. Perhaps the defect is more prevelant on recently slabbed cases and occured far less often on previous batches. Or perhaps now that I know exactly what im looking for I am just noticing it finally.

Either way I am still submitting 8 cases to CGC. 7 for damaged cases (one of which also has a corner with the odd material) and 1 case that is not damaged but has a corner with the odd material (the initial pics in my original post).
