hm I like Oak. I'm cutting old growth Oak right now on 225 acres. Practically in the middle of Albany, NY.

Do you mainly deal with hardwoods? Are you an independent for a lumber company?

I have a degree in Forestry, but with the collapse of the lumber industry back in the mid 90's I never really got to do what I wanted.
I do mainly deal in hardwoods. Also, I am an independent logging contractor. I do selective cutting only. I come up sith my own plans, like mark the trees and deal with the landowners direct. I sell my logs to a local buyer. who has markets wordwide. I also have about 200 wood customers, who I deliver 8 1/2 cord loads of log lenth.

Currently, i'm on quite a high profile job, as it sets almost in the city limits. The landowners have owned this parcel for about 100 years. The public has been allowed to use and abuse the land. It's a shame they (the public) rebel when the owners who pay taxes want to do some logging, like they did 20 years ago. It's completely surrounded by heavy developement. The neighbors have not been all that cooperative. 3 different top town officials (including town supervisor) paid me a visit last week, to make sure everything is on the up and up. Luckily, they are cooperating with me. The trees are about 120' tall, and 25" + DBH. The terrain is steep. 2 huge ravines to cross. Seems I work alone, I will be here for a while.

In that case, you may want to have that growth, to the left, checked out.

Hard and dangerous to work alone. You haul you own logs or subcontract it out?

I have a trucker I hire to haul logs and firewood. Here's a pic off an old job of him loading firewood. Much smaller timber than the job i'm on now.
