Micronauts started off better with the Golden art, but Rom ended better as the storyline got more interesting later in the run.

for me the Winner is .....ROM. Story over art for me. Though I do have a nagging memory of the silly romknights costumes too.

oops, spaceknights.

Wow... That's a tough question to answer.

I started reading Micronauts with issue #9, and for some reason I found some of the plotlines a little convoluted as a kid. Unfortunately, since I didn't have access to the title after it went direct-only (issue #37 or #38, I think), I never did get to see what became of it later in the run. It wasn't until the "New Voyages" came along that I picked it up again. By that time, there'd been a lot of changes and I was missing a couple of years of backstory, so I gave it up after just a few issues. The art was fantastic while Golden was on board, otherwise I don't recall anything particularly special.

With Rom, I started reading it from the first issue. The first year or so of the "misunderstood killer robot" storylines were great, but the title mellowed a bit after the presence of the Wraiths became known to the locals and all of a sudden Rom was the "robot savior" and the "return to Galador / I want to be a human again" storylines started. The plot really picked up when the Wraith invasion started in force. I do regret that I stopped collecting in the late-60s and never got to read the final conclusion to the storyline. The Golden covers early in the run were fantastic, and I've always had a soft-spot for Buscema's artwork.

I think overall, I'd have to give the nod to Rom as the better title...

The Dire Wraiths really kick into high gear with issue # 48 # 47. They go from a somewhat scary foe to an absolutely terrifying one.

One of the plus points to Micronauts was the Golden art which was great. I picked up the "New Voyages" but it wasn't a patch on the original title.

Like you said I really liked Sal Buscema's work on Rom which is a good thing as he drew the vast majority of issues. In fact I would class Rom as one of Buscema's signature characters.

I know that the Micronauts toys were widely available in the UK but I can't ever remember any of my friends owning a Rom? hm \(shrug\)

That is pretty creepy in an Invasion of the Bodysnatchers kind of way...

Micronauts were pretty rare in Canada - well, at least in my part of Canada. ;\) I can only recall one or two kids in my neighborhood who had any of the toys or figures.

As for Rom, I've only ever seen one of the toys in photos on-line. I can't think of a single person who ever owned one at the time. Through the late 70s / early 80s, all my friends were playing with Star Wars or G.I. Joe toys.

ROM - loved it from issue #1 but stopped reading at about #50, so I should re-read and complete it at some point.

It was the Dire Wraiths that made it for me - the whole storyline reminded me of the TV show the Invaders.
