Oh man, you got me thinking about "Lost" again. There's a show I don't plan to watch again. It was fun being into it for the first few seasons. I think what bothered me the most was when they explained that Hurley doesn't ever lose weight, in spite of constantly hiking and having access to healthy food, because the Dharma Initiative keeps air-dropping huge CostCo-sized jars of ranch dressing.

Yeah, they explained it. Still, I wish they would have given that actor more money and then set him up with a dietician and a personal trainer and had him gradually lose weight on the show. That would have been cool to see, especially since he is one of the most likeable cast members.

I watched "Lost" all the way through and was really disappointed to find out the makers didn't have more of a master plan to the various storylines. They basically lied during their ComicCon appearances when they said everything had a designated endpoint.

When you think that they were all actually dead the whole time, him not losing weight actually makes sense.

They aren't actually dead until the final season. But it does make sense in practical terms because they wouldn't be able to show him in flashbacks. They'd have to figure out his story arc and then shoot the flashback scenes far in advance.

After watching the Interview with Damon, I believe they did have an endpoint in mind from the beginning. It's just that it wasn't as complicated and involved as many of us had hoped.

I started watching LOST with the episode where Jack and Locke went into the hatch and was drawn in by the method of storytelling that used the flashbacks to develop the characters. I was heavily engrossed with the Dharma Initiative and thought that it and the Hanso Foundation would figure more in to the ending and overall mystery of the show. So I was largely disappointed with the overall ending of the show, even though the finale was incredibly emotional and surprising (fact that the flash sideways was a purgatory of sorts).

Me too -- I thought emotionally it was OK, it's just that I was never into the show just to see the characters work out their personal issues; the show promised something on a grander, more sci-fi, mystical/mythical, philosphical level. And then it never delivered it, though it did have some fairly vauge Manichean (good vs. evil) elements and such. I didn't want some boring technical explanation for everything, but it would have been nice if at least things got pulled together into something coherent. I was led to expect that there might be some really big revelation at the end -- something that completely pulled away the curtain and reflected on everything in a whole new light. It seemed like the show had been building up a giant promise that yes, the whole thing would turn out to have a point. Instead, it was like a big pastiche of scenes or climaxes from other movies. Then all that stuff in the church was kind of like a Lifetime drama ending, and some of it didn't make sense: Like why do Charlie and Claire have a baby; is the baby dead too? It's almost as if the writers knew they didn't have an "Aha!" for the main story, so they snuck an "Aha!" into the flash-sideways story to make up for it, and hoped audiences would be satisfied to get a bunch of climax action endings along with it. Arrgghhh okay now I'm just getting peeved again. 6 years! I wouldn't mind so much if I'd just watched them on DVDs, but I actually scheduled my weekday to watch the show like a good little fanboy monkey.

Yeah, that one unbelievable point to the storyline was quite a stretch to any sense of reality. I'm glad you pointed that out.
