Hmmm... I must've missed the part where ANYONE suggested Moore should've accepted his fate, rather than pursuing a different publishing/creative path. I've also missed the part where it was stated that DC has always ripped people off. \(shrug\)

Adjusted for clarity.

Hiyo!

Once again... your over-simplification to justify your rude judgmental-comments once again further displays your lack of depth in understanding and your over-sized ego/arrogance.

In all obviousness... the contract was thought nothing more, but a reassurance of the understanding that was thought to have been shared with those parties involved during the inception of The Watchmen, to think that he should have anything to worry about when it was pitched to Alan/Dave and that agreement premise on the understanding and acceptance that rights would be retain in entirely even in part to allowance of how DC wanted to exploit the work, but rights would be regain and retain once the normal circulation of the title went its course... is just a hindsight-decision/judgement in part, that was not available or capable of Alan Moore at the time seeing that there was more to his relationships there then him just being a working-pawn in the DC Comics.

Also... genius is a stature given in hindsight of someones life. There is nothing stupid about trusting your friends/colleagues or even family.

P.S.
If anything... DC Comic and all of there executives were all stupid to think Alan Moore would have stayed and endure the way they treat true-writers/creators apart of there company. They got away with it with Jack Kirby, but Alan Moore came in in a different time-period and gladly walked away and STILL IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE REVERED for his choice and his decisions since!

Some situations ARE simple. A contract is a legal and binding document. All of our board lawyers will advise you that a contract should be read before signing.

'Lack of depth in understanding' in this case means not giving Alan a free pass for a terrible error in judgement - not reading the terms of a legal document.

As far as the question of Alan Moore being a genius - that's not something I'd debate. He's one of, if not the, finest writers to work in the medium. His work itself is not at issue here.

BTW, any 'rude judgemental-comments' in your first paragraph?

Hiyo!

Your lack of ability to understand the context of the pitch and purposed agreement during the inception of The Watchmen describe is what the problem is. Who are we to Alan Moore that we have any authority to judge whether if it was or not and even if so... should we not forgive to give some sort of "free pass" or not; you nor I, but ONLY Alan Moore has the right to decide this sort of fact on HIS decision from HIS past that HE-HIMSELF experienced.

Sure, we can have our opinion on the events describe, but only in the context to describe our feelings based on...

You have over-stepped your boundary and crossed into the territories of sheer arrogance in defiance of your place in regards to the discussion. If your statements were, "Good thing now people have better understandings for contractual agreements and how having council can aid in reduction of exploitation or thief of rights that persons would have under those circumstances", then we would have no problem and further go into examples toward other true-writer exploited-situations or further the narrative and give examples of law today, but since you neither said this... argument ensues!

Over-simplification is just as bad, if not worst then over-generalization...

Regarding the italicized, did we not know these things in 1985??

Hiyo!

Sure, if he had reason to have a working-knowledge of United State federal laws according to Patent-rights...

Despite whatever that was all about, I'll say it again in simple terms: In 1985 that probably seemed like a decent deal. No tpb was consistently in print over the course of any lengthy period of time.
I'm pretty sure DC didn't purposely screw them over, because they couldn't really KNOW it was something that would be in print for 20+ years. They benefitted from the wording of the contract, and Moore got his work out there for the world to see.
DC could have, you good faith, reworked a deal for them, but that's not really in their best interests. It just doesn't work that way. So Moore has hard feelings about it.
End of story.
