I thought I read/heard somewhere that Zeppelin didn't even think "Stairway" was the epic hit off that album. I believe that honor was suppsoed to go to "The Battle Of Evermore".
That would be incorrect. Page knew Stairway was going to be huge, which is why he had the lyrics put into the album liner (a first for the band).

I was always curious why those were the only lyrics printed on the sleeve of my vinyl copy. Now it somewhat makes sense. I would rather bands print all the lyrics to their songs.

Er, other than the fact that it was the actually song that started the whole genre, yes, you're completely right.
Yep. That song and Over The Hills And Far Away were the progenitors of the much maligned Power Ballad. Trouble is, only Led Zeppelin knew how to do it right.
In general, Black Dog and Stairway are two songs I never have to hear again for the rest of my life. Give me Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You, or Communication Breakdown, or Rock and Roll, or Kashmir, or Nobody's Fault But Mine anyday.
+1. That song, along with "The Immigrant Song" are two of the hits which could use a bit more radio play IMHO.

I can never get sick of this song.
