I was following it too, Scott -- just happy I got my copy years ago! It is a great book, seems like one of the more purely "scary" covers Wolverton did. I don't have all the PCH classics I'd like to have, but this one is fun to own. \:\)

I'll end up sounding like Mitch, but the PCH market has really accelerated over the last year with a lot of GPA highs being set by large margins. No telling how long it will last but I think a 50-100% increase in average price is where this is headed.

If that is the case, then I might be paying cash for my 2015 Mustang GT.

I would have to say that I agree with you on this Jeff. The books that I have followed in various auctions have left my jaw dropped on more than one occasion. It makes me very happy to still have the books that I do.

There have been so many books recently that, with days to go in an auction, exceeded what I expected they would go for. The change has been abrupt and fueled my more than one dedicated collector.
I think it's safe to assume that this and other in-demand PCH books must contain stories involving iconic superheros as those are the only GA comics that can appreciate. \(\:

Alan, I think my initial reason for starting this thread was due to the shock I was experiencing that a pre-code book, raw at that, was garnering such spirited bidding. Pre-codes have always been somewhat of a redheaded step-child in in the hobby, and it is refreshing to see some of these truly awesome books receive their due. I realize it will make it harder to buy certain issues down the road, but that is the give and take that makes collecting fun. If it was easy to find, it wouldn't be nearly as rewarding.

I think the PCH stuff has more of a dedicated following than just about anything...not to mention the rarity of them due to the Wertham driven scare of the 50's driving up the demand for these scarce books even further. All I have seen in the last many years is the continued rise in demand of nice PC books.

PCH is driven by 3 things:classic covers, interior art and story by the greats and scarcity.

They go up and down in popularity. A few years ago they were a tough sell. I started collecting during a slump in the market. Decided to pursue the covers. I think I've done well, but that WTOF is a shocker.

The WTOF 3 is my all-time favorite horror book, even over Weird Mysteries 4 and 5. I have a raw copy that I bought about 5 years ago, it's about a 7.0 or so. Good investment for $500 at the time. It is readily obtainable in G-VG or VG if one is persistent; I've had several in that range. But anything better than 5.0 is darn tough.

I think somebody must have seen this auction go sky high and decided it would be a good time to sell, because here's another copy in much lower grade. (There's also an auction for issue #1 , also in low grade.)

I have a copy, which looks to be in reasonable high grade but does have a little glue on the spine, which I'm reluctant to have removed. Still kicking myself even now over missing out on a VF+ copy on Heritage several years ago which ended up at around $1400.

WTOF 3 is definitely up there in the PCH pantheon. Can't be many books in this genre that would go for more in HG. Weird Mysteries 4 and 5, and Mister Mystery 12 spring to mind (as you never see those in high grade), but not many other books....

I agree. WMyst 3- although not quite the classic as the others are, is nevertheless a classic Bailey cover, and one that doesn't get much props in my opinion. I had sought to upgrade my VG for years until finally got one that's probably 7.5. Wicked tough in any grade above VG. Same goes for the WM 12.

There are no bad covers in that run....they're all classics.
