Depression is a mental/psychological disorder, not a disease.
I think this gets right down to it as to how you've come to your opinion. Essentially, if I am reading you correctly, you think a disease has to be something that has a physical effect on your body and because addiction has more to do with your mental/psychological being, you don't see it as a disease. Well, here's a tip, the brain is part of your body. It is affected by these things. You need to get over the fact that there's no physical tumor to remove.

Addiction is much deeper
I know all about addiction. I took vicodin for 12 years. I was addicted even though I took it as prescribed. If I didn't take it within an hour each day of the same time, I'd start withdrawals. I weaned myself off of it a month ago. Pure hell, the withdrawls. I didn't want to be on it anymore. It quit working. I was having to take it just to feel normal. I have almost a full bottle in a cabinet within arms reach of me right now and have no desire to start it again, and I won't unless the Dr wants me to after my tolerance gets down to a normal persons. Even then I'd likely not start it.
Congratulations on beating your reliance on pain killers. I'm truly happy for you.

Good for you, Thing. If you really don't want to do it again, I'd suggest getting it out of your house.
If the doctor wants you to get back on it, he can write you a new scrip.

A disease can also be looked at as something that takes the body out of homeostasis. In other words, someone is diseased when their body is not working inside the normal parameters of functionality. Alcoholism does that. It prevents the body/mind from working inside the normal range of functioning for us. Therefore, it is a disease.

Depression is a mental/psychological disorder, not a disease. You might be on to something. I see alcoholism as a mental illness more than a disease. Think about that AA is the therapy for the mental illness of alcoholism.

Alcoholism is an addiction (to alcohol). So it is an addiction much like any other drug addiction.
Alcoholism is a disease; it fits the criteria of disease (as stated earlier). It is chronic, follows a predictable course, has symptoms, causes cellular damage, and is morbid.
Alcoholism is a mental illness as well. Chronic poisoning from alcohol results in compulsive drinking and insane behavior. Willpower is not a factor in recovery until the compulsion has been removed. An alcoholic needs to recognize his mental instability in order to make an honest attempt to stop drinking.
There is no “choice” as in “power of choosing”. This perspective, based on ignorance, is what doomed many alcoholics for centuries.
Alcoholism is characterized by a mental obsession coupled with a physical allergy. A true alcoholic reacts very differently to alcohol than a moderate drinker or continuous hard drinker. A true alcoholic, with few exceptions, will be absolutely unable to stop drinking on the basis of self-knowledge.
Alcoholics have permanently stopped drinking through one or a combination of the following; medical treatment centers, 12-step groups, or their own volition. It is always a process, not an event.
