What is actually the point of your poll?
I don't see any point other than a forthcoming argument.
Not really a chance for debate when you are clearly entrenched on your side already.
Yup.
I think its an insult to call it a disease when there are real diseases
And I find this comment telling. He comes off (to me) as somewhat scornful about the whole thing. The choice of this wording, and the fact that it immediately follows his personal story about how he could have been an alcoholic according to some but could stop drinking on a dime (you know, because he's just so much better than anybody who can't make the simple choice not to drink, because it can't be anything more than a choice, like broccoli or peas) shows me somebody who has his mind made up already. And to top it off, finds the mere thought of how an "illness" that affects millions (and if broadened to include any addiction, tens of millions) is categorized or by what wording is used to categorize it is personally insulting to him. It's another holier than thou, "look at me" thread when you get to the bottom of it. Damned Texans, don't they have anything better to do than attention whore?
This.

A disease is an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism. It is often construed to be a medical condition associated with specific symptoms and signs.[1] It may be caused by external factors, such as infectious disease, or it may be caused by internal dysfunctions, such as autoimmune diseases. In humans, "disease" is often used more broadly to refer to any condition that causes pain, dysfunction, distress, social problems, and/or death to the person afflicted, or similar problems for those in contact with the person.
So, yeah, Alcoholism is a disease. It is right to be defined as an addiction to. The both are not mutually exclusive

What is the intention of the poll? Debate. I singled out no one, attacked no one and stated my position and why it is what it is. I then wanted to hear what others thought. I'm surprised at the results actually. Either thinking on this as a disease has really changed or people are just voting "Yes" because I voted "No". As far as the "look at me threads"? Go though the first 10 pages and see how many threads I have started. There are attention whores here, I'm not one of them.
As some of you know, my niece had cancer, Wilms Disease. She had no choice in the matter, she couldn't walk away from the tumor. She couldn't attend meetings to help her from getting it. Even if alcoholism is a disease, its a disease you choose to have and are not forced to have. That is my opinion based on personal experience and 40 years of living.
This is what I take issue with. Your position that addicts choose to be addicts. Nobody I know chooses to become addicted to pain killers or gambling. If you've ever spent any time in AA or GA or a like program, you'd have a better understanding of it. I got to sit in on some meetings when I was in college and it's devastating to see what happens to people who become addicted. And that's key. It's a process. It's not like you just wake up and decide, I'm going to be an alcoholic today. Addiction is an insidious disease that takes hold of people over time. You don't just choose it like you chose what pants to put on this morning.
You're basically belittling those who suffer from addiction. That said, your position is actually quite common for those who haven't suffered or have a clear understanding of addiction. You can claim otherwise but you'd be fooling yourself. Anybody who boils addiction down to something as simplistic as choice obviously doesn't know what they're talking about. I'm not saying that to be rude either.
The fact that you are surprised by the poll results, or seem to not understand why most medical associations of any prominence or note consider addiction to be a disease clearly shows your opinion is based not so much in science or biology but rather your own prejudice and lack of understanding. Go sit in an AA meeting, come back and tell me that the people you saw there said anything to the effect of they willingly chose to become addicted.
