I am new to the hobby and I struggle at times with knowing when I am making a financially sound purchase. I am interested in what means and methods people use in determining, before making a purchase, they are getting a good deal or not? Ebay Completed Purchases, GPA Prices, ComicPriceguide.com, Overstreet or experience and instinct?

As long as I feel good about the book I'm buying, and a little research before I look for a particular book.

I do not buy really expensive books, so I check the price according to Overstreet Price Guide and also make a comparison with the price in mycomicshop.com and the price for a similar book in ebay.co.uk.

To me ebay is the best place to look. HA and MyComicshop.com always demand a bit bigger of a price because there so little chance of bad sellers.

I just check what the going prices are on Ebay then look for it here for 12% less (Ebay & PP fees). Pay by check.

Just do whatever it takes to cut out the middle man IE the WTS posts here.

This is a great question. I buy CGC books only; therefore, I use GPA. That being said, I also use 'price spreads' between grades to determine if it is worth buying a 9.2 vs. a 9.4 vs. a 9.6, etc. Then I look at the price of the book over a span of several years, not just the one year average. I also take into account the potential provenance of the book (if it is a pedigree) or how much of a 'key' issue it truly is. GPA truly is a great tool.

Kind Regards,

'mint'

This (above) is good advise. but I also check comiclink and comicconnect for recent sales/bids. Shame GPA doesn't collect data from everywhere

And i have seen MAJOR differences. For example hulk 181 cgc 9.6 GPA shows $4k or so, and there were two recent sales for >$6K at CLink.....

Unfortunately, Comic Link does not report to GPA, so those prices would not show up in a GPA inquiry. That being said, you are correct, it does also pay to check completed and pending sales at Comic Link in addition to using GPA.

Respectfully,
