I met Clayton at Emerald City ComiCon several years ago when they were auctioning off his amazing cover for the HERO 100 Ultimate Spider-Man project. I have had the great fortune to get a number of commissions from him over the years (see below). My books aren't for sale but now you have a chance to get a Crain masterpiece too.
I spoke with Clayton the other day and he is going to do commissions for a while. Here is the link to his website where you can order yours. Clayton Crain commissions!
I am not getting anything for promoting Clayton. I'm doing it as a favor to all you guys that have been bugging me for years to sell you one of my books. You can do me a favor though and tell him you heard about this opportunity from Steve Nelsen.

Thanks, Troy. Here is backstory about this book. Clayton had never done Hulk for Marvel so he wasn't asked to do a book for the HERO Hulk 100 project. When I was at his booth at Emerald City three years ago, I was surprised to see a Hulk print he was selling. I thought it was really good and thought it was a shame that he didn't get to do a book for the Hulk HERO project. I spoke to Clayton about Hulk when we were brainstorming commission ideas a while back and he said that he had an idea for an amazing Hulk but he didn't say anything more than that.
Some time after that, there was a dealer on eBay auctioning off some unused HERO 100 blanks that he had received from HERO. I remembered discussing Hulk with Clayton and asked him if he would be interested in doing a Hulk if I could get him a HERO blank. He got a gleam in his eye. Every time I have seen that gleam, he has done something incredible. So, I made sure that I won that auction!
Here is the crazy thing. Clayton couldn't remember the amazing Hulk idea that he had hinted at to me years before. He still doesn't remember! So somewhere in the synapses of his unbelievable creative brain is a Hulk that is even better than this one
...and I have a blank waiting for the day that Clayton says, "Hey, I finally remembered my idea for Hulk. Do you want me to do it?"

Man that is one of the most amazing sketches I have ever seen, up there with Mad-Dogz Finch oil. Man... I will have one of his acrylics before the year is over.

I think the new Batman 61 cover stock is different from the Batman 18 cover stock. But, I don't think that will make a difference for his acrylics. He didn't mention any problems working on this cover.
However, he takes so much time painting that I don't know if he can do a book at a show. You might need to mail it to him in advance and pick it up at the show.

Yeah it is different but I don't have an 18 anymore. I hate to be the guinea pig in case the acrylics wont take with the 61's waxy cover.

While I was visiting with Crain, I snuck a peek at some commissions he is doing for others and I saw some crazy good stuff: Deadpool, Storm, Spidey, Wolverine...It was sensory overload seeing so much amazing art at once. I saw sketch books, wood panels, canvas, a backer board.
I don't know who he was doing them for but I hope they are boardies because you guys will be happy. Crain said he was going to post some on his website today so you might want to check it out.

I'm convinced this guy just has a amazing stack of HI blanks in a box at his house.
It's okay if he gave them to you, I got a few Vampirella blanks from an artist not too long ago.
I looked up my notes and it was ebay seller Boondock. He had some Hulks, Spideys and Weapon X blanks. I have a few with Clayton and a few Hulks still stashed away.

Love the Deadpool and Wolvie! Clayton continues to kill these! I'm so happy I was able to get Crain acrylic pieces done the first and second year he was doing them...
How much does he charge? How much would it cost (total) for a sketch of similar quality to what people are posting along with all the CGC Sig Series fees?

$375 just for the sketch + $5 blank + $30-40 CGC'd
add $38 (fast-tracked grading) + $5 (invoice) + Shipping (fee schedule starts at $14 for 1 book for registered mail USPS) + Insurance (fee schedule starts at $13.25 for up to $500 value) = $70.25 for CGC + the cost tier you choose for your sketch.

he just started this rate recently. His prices in February were $130 for marker and $200 for acrylic, even with 2 characters

That's crazy prices! I got into the mix in the bracket before the current, but it was nothing like that!

I might've considered it at that price point. As they are now, I'll just admire everyone elses books.

Agreed, I was really happy to get one at those rates at ECCC 2010 (Spidey and MJ based on his Sensational Spider-Man 32 cover which was up as an example on his commissions page for quite a while). Even that was hard to do as I got his first acrylic Wolvie at ECCC 2009 when he was first trying them out as an experiment and then they were just a ridiculously good deal...
Always loved Clayton's art and his commissions are absolutely stunning!!!

Trust me. Crain is worth the wait. I have waited for a year between books from him back when he wasn't doing commissions and those books were worth it. I know his wait time is a bit longer now than it was a few months ago since he has started doing his own book but it isn't too long and he has been cranking out some crazy good stuff.

Oh yeah, I'm pretty excited to get one from him when my name comes up. All the cover work I've seen him do are just absolutely brilliant.

Bumping this thread and reposting the link to Crain's commission page. There have been some amazing Crains posted in the Best of threads recently and I got a couple PMs from boardies looking to add a grail sketch cover to their collections.

I haven't posted this one before.
He did an X-Force poster for Emerald City years ago that Marvel used for a cover. Wolverine had this same badazz pose and his claws were not all parallel so it created an "Edward Scissorhands" impression.

Anybody had any luck setting up a comission via his website? I've tried, but so far, no response......
I commissioned a sketch cover from Clayton in October through his website. I think that he was full about then. Mike from CGC called last week and informed me that it is in for grading.

For his latest round, I set up a commission on stretched canvas (so no CGC) and I got it at the end of January. He kept me in the loop throughout FWIW.

I had the honor of watching him do a painted commission at Tampa last weekend. This dude is a professional in all aspects. It's hard to explain how awesome it is to watch this guy work and actually learning something from it. He could have easily stopped half way through his painting and the customer would have been blown away... but he didn't and the results were astonishing.
Seeing that the thread went hot again I'll post my only Crain which I commissioned last October (2012). Apologies to some since I posted previously in the Avengers 1 thread. There's absolutely no doubt his art is world class.

Anybody have a contact for Crain that works I am trying to contact him to do a commission and wanted to know his rates turnaround times and etc. I had one email that I tried a few weeks back and heard nothing back from.

That's the only way I know and he's not super good about responding right away more like a few months later when you finally forget about it.

I'd generally, say count on spending $350 to $425 for a blank cover. He'll send the art to CGC for you if you fill in the paperwork and send it with your blank. Did you send a mesage using the contact page on his website? I'm thinking you did, but just being certain. If not, do so and you'll get in line. He'll get back to you when his schedule allows him to open some time for commissions. You may hear back from him before he opens commissions, but probably not. He's pretty good about telling you his schedule once he is starting a round of comissions.
