I did this years ago and it works...put baking soda (about an inch) or you can leave them in small open boxes, in a plastic container, the kind you put under your bed for storage, or the kind you use for recycling stuff...put the wire baking racks that you use to cool things after they come out of the oven on the bottom of the container. Leave some backing boards on top of the racks, so there are no indentations. Put the comics on top of the backing boards (I used the non acid ones...I also added some micro chamber paper, figured it would not hurt.
Leave it for a while...I have done it with cigarette smoke and it did work...never tried kitty litter, but it's probably easier to empty out later.
