But, at the end of the day, they're not, as far as I can tell, asking for any handouts to remedy these "problems".

These guys are clueless as to perception and seem irresponsible. But they made the mistake of wanting to be understood. Plenty of people are looking for that. However, I think they'd have been better off keeping their mouth shut and complaining over cigars and brandy at the club.

Chris, it's no different than someone coming on here and saying something like: I just lost my annual bonus, so I need to sell my comics to support my family.

You could argue that they shouldn't have put the money into comics in the first place, but as people we like to indulge in things that help us reward ourselves from the fruit of our labours.

If anything, this does not show to be a problem with the rich, it's a problem with society itself in that the focus has shifted from stability to gratification.

And that is something that I think most of us are guilty of.

I think the comparison would be if someone came on and said, "I didn't get my bonus, now I can only buy one book instead of 5 in the upcoming auction."

Everything these people are complaining about is a 100% luxury item.

Private school for the kiddies is a luxury
Vacation rental property for 4 months is a luxury
Vacation rental property for 1 month is a luxury
Gun Club membership
Dog Walker & boarding
Country club
etc...

So you didn't get your bonus and now you've got to cut back...well, what is most important and what is least important?

The article said one of the people clears just under 200K annually after taxes, contributions, etc...

That's a heck of alot more money than most families make before any of that.

Sounds to me like most of their problems stem from living in one of the world's most expensive cities, Manhattan.

Again, I think it is a relative argument.

Let's face it, eople get their shorts in a knot because of the amount of money, but again, it's a relative argument.

How much money does the average collector/person spend on comics (non essential items)? $20 a week? $50 a week? $100 a week?

Even that can be a lot of money to someone out of a job, living off of food stamps. My ex would get furious as the thought of me spending $100 or $1000 on a comic. That was her perspective. To me, it was just a terrific investment.

Our reality changes as our surroundings change. It's tough to judge one person's reality when you are comparing it to someone else's that is entirely different.

I'm not standing up for people who live in the 1 percentile and don't put something away for a rainy day. It's foolish for anyone to not balance their chequebooks. I'm just saying I can understand where they are coming from...and that I'd bet the majority of North Americans lives the same way regardless of income bracket.

Loc: The one true undisputed Truth
If you spend money on certain collectibles that appreciate in value and enjoy doing so, then that is investment/fun oriented. Spending money on non necessities such as luxury trips, wine, carousing, etc. without putting money away in savings is foolish. You can sell the collectibles when time gets tough, so this may be factored into future spending. However, spending $10K on a trip with a few trinkets to show for it, is not planning ahead.

The carp will hit the fan when in a few years all the high powered University graduates can't find a job, can't pay back student loans, and can't have fun.
