QUESTION:

The American Numismatic Society (ANS) boasts one of the largest publicly accessible coin collections in the United States. In what year was this organization founded, and what was the very first coin donated to the collection?

Our first place winner will receive a copy of America’s Money, America’s Story, A Chonicle of American Numismatic History, econd Edition by Richard Doty.

There will also be a runner up prize given to a selected player with the correct answer.

The ANS was founded in 1858 and the first coin that was donated was an 1825 Half Cent donated by Augustus B. Sage.

The ANS was organized in 1858 and the first coin donated was an 1825 Half Cent.

Founded in 1891 and the first coin donated was a half cent of 1825, (ANS1858.1.1), a piece donated by Augustus B. Sage.

The very first coin ever given to the Society, donated by Augustus B. Sage in 1858 was an 1825 half cent.

The ANS was formed by a group of collectors in New York City in 1858, at a time when many learned societies were created. Although the initial meeting of the collectors occurred in March of 1858, the Society looks back to April 6, 1858 as its date of creation; that was the day on which the fledgling Society's first constitution and bylaws were approved by the membership. That same month, the Society accessioned its first coin. (below)
