I'll start off with my thoughts on Joey Barton and today's Newcastle-Arsenal match:
If I was the Arsenal manager I would bring In Jageilka, Barton, Mata and Oxlaide chamberlain. I wouldn't take Barton - Martin Keown was as thuggish as I would allow in an Arsenal uniform.
I think we saw today exactly why I would never want to see Joey Barton in an Arsenal shirt. He's not and has never been "exactly what we need" - any "steel" he brings to the squad is offset 100x over by his temperment, his thuggery and all the discord and tension he brings both on and off the pitch.
Anyway, this match was destined for 0-0 even before Gervinho's sending off. We're still playing 4-5-1 (really don't think it's working for us), we're still not winning anything in the air because we didn't buy anyone tall/physical, we still don't have a great finisher up front...Cesc and Nasri being on their way out plus an injury to Wilshere meant we lacked any creativity up front as well. Rosicky proved in his one chance early on that he still can't hit the side of a barn. Gervinho impressed a bit, but he reminds me of Aleksandr Hleb - quick, but not a great finisher. Gibbs did OK defensively, but was a total non-factor up front (unlike Clichy who created many chances each match with his runs down the left). Song...eh - we need another holding midfielder in any case with Fab leaving.
On the plus side, Vermaelen and Koscielny looked solid at the back. Sagna was up to scratch. Ramsey looked back to pre-injury form. Overall, the passing was very crisp, even better than last season, but nothing that's going to worry the likes of ManU or Barcelona. We need to sell Cesc and Nasri and reinvest the proceeds, pronto. Today's line-up was weaker than last season's and it's clear even after one match that we need reinforcements (heck, it was clear last season and, yet, the only new face in today's line-up was Gervinho). Between last season's epic collapse, the lackluster pre-season performances and today's match, I can't say with any certainty that the Champions League group stages are a lock at this point. Any hiccup against Udinese at the Emirates on Tuesday and Arsenal fans are going to have even more cause to riot.

I'm struggling to understand why Kieran Richardson wasn't sent off for bringing Suarez down in a breakaway situation.
I also think that Suarez has a pretty insurmountable lead for worst penalty of the season. Considering how good his penalties were in the Copa America, this was really shocking. I would guess that penalty duties will rightly go back to Gerrard, Adam or Kuyt for the rest of the season.

Yeah but Barton was a disgrace. I don't excuse Gervinho's action but it was Bartons reaction and violent conduct. in dragging him up from the floor by the scruff of the kneck, that started it all. It was then Bartons cowedly act of going down like a ton of bricks and then lieing to everyone who would listen that he had been punched, even though all he got was a clip round the head. This was totally unacceptable and un execusable.
I would also add that Taylor was even more culpable. Running to the referee and then the linesmen to tell them that Gervinho had elbowed Barton when he clearly hadn't. He then had the nerve to offer a no comment when interviewed by ESPN and then when pushed say that he had failed to see the incident. Absolutely disgraceful.
Wenger was right when he said either two yellows or two reds should have been handed out and that the referee hadn't seen the incident so therefore should not have made the decision that he did.

If you take the letter of the law literally then you have a point. However, there is a case to had that Saurez had pushed the ball to far away from him for it to be a clear scoring chance and like Dalgliesh said, If it had been against them and the player was sent off he would have been disapointed.
Dalgliesh earnt a lot of respect from me with his interview, talking about the penalty. It was really refreshing how he stood up for Richardson, agreed that it was nothing more than a tangle of legs and made a stand for common sense, stating that if the challenge is not malicious in any way then why would you want the player to be sent off. I couldn't agree more.

Last time I checked, the only red card that was handed out in the game was to an Arsenal player, not Barton. And Song should've been red carded too.
Way to use a terrible ref's call to back up a terrible suggestion. Although, surely we knew it was a horrible idea even before yesterday's match, with Barton's recent Twitter antics just reinforcing the fact that his kind of disruptive presence is precisely the last thing that Arsenal need at this time.
I know the commentators said that Song should have been red carded, but I think they were just trying to inject some drama into a total snooze-fest of a match. If that was a "stamp" on Barton, it was the weakest stamp in the history of mankind. Just look at the slow-motion replay - Barton's facial expression doesn't change one iota because he probably barely felt it. It didn't look remotely intentional or malicious on Song's part - if the commentators hadn't made a mountain out of a molehill, I wouldn't have even have picked it up on the replay as it didn't look like anything at all.
Of course, Barton going down like a ton of bricks from Gervinho's tap on the head a full second after it happened was just disgraceful - even more disgraceful than Gervinho's flop in the box. Anyway, Gervinho deserved to go off, if not for a straight red, then for simulation + the tap to Barton. But, Barton should have seen straight red for instigating the latter, no question.
