ALL-PEDIGREE SALE:
300+ Books from the Pedigreed Central Valley Collection
Hi, all. Thanks for stopping by!
It’s been several months since my last “All-Pedigree” sale. Hopefully, this one will be as well-received as last May’s River City sale. Over the next two weeks, I’ll be listing several hundred books from the pedigreed Central Valley Collection. As many of you know, this collection was brought to market in 2006 by Brian Peets, owner of A-1 Comics in Sacramento and Roseville. It spans the years 1938-1954. Although the vast majority of the comics were purchased at various drug stores and newsstands within Kern County, CA (including such towns as Bakersfield and Taft), a few of the books were purchased in Santa Monica (a few hours southwest of Kern County via Interstate 5) and other small towns in between. It appears that the collection resided in Kern County until it was purchased by Brian in 1993. Although 90% of the collection is made up of adventure and humor books that feature the popular newspaper characters of the day (including Blondie, Díck Tracy, Flash Gordon, Fritzi Ritz, Li’l Abner, Mandrake the Magician, Mutt & Jeff, Nancy & Sluggo, Popeye, Tarzan, Terry & the Pirates, The Katzenjammer Kids, etc), the collection is so-far best known for its ultra high-grade superhero component (Action 24-30, Batman 2-6, Detective 41-59, Superman 4-16), most of which became top-census copies when the collection was certified by CGC in 2006.
According to Steve Borock (Scoop, September 16, 2006), "When I went out to see the collection, it blew away all of my expectations. After working at CGC and grading almost a million books, and owning some of the best books in the world prior to CGC, I have never seen some of these issues in any grade, let alone in these high grades. The page quality of these books rivals, if not blows away the quality of the Mile Highs and San Franciscos.” According to Matt Nelson and Steve Ritter, in terms of page quality, the Central Valley Collection is the #2 ranked Golden Age pedigree (just behind the Vancouver Collection). I totally agree – the cover inks and interiors of nearly every book in this set are every bit as fresh as when the comics were originally on the stand. Clean white back covers, white inside covers, and blinding white pages. One purchase and you’ll be hooked!
The books to be listed here are fresh from the vault of A-1 Comics. They belong to Brian and have been in his possession since he acquired them in 1993. I’ll be managing this sale on his behalf. Each morning, I’ll list a couple of title runs or a few dozen semi-randomly selected books. Feel free to start a stack and then add to it as the sale progresses. We’ll invoice you at the conclusion of the two-week sale (or sooner, upon request). All books are guaranteed to be unrestored.
All books will be shipped from A-1 Comics via fully-insured USPS Priority Mail with delivery or signature confirmation. The exact cost of shipping will be added to your order. Bullet-proof packaging guaranteed! Payment to A-1 Comics may be by PayPal, Cashier’s Check, USPS Money Order, business/personal check (but please allow up to ten days for your check to clear), or cash (in-store pickup only). Payment must be received within seven calendar days of being invoiced (unless other arrangements have been agreed to via PM). Items will ship within three business days of your payment. International buyers are welcomed. Miscreants, wankers, and folks currently on probation are not. Free domestic shipping on orders totaling $2000 or more.

Planet Comics #4 (Apr 1940). CGC Grade = 9.2 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $9500. A real beauty with all the hallmarks of the Central Valley Collection. Perfectly wrapped and cut. Worth a cool 6000 registry points!
Etta Kett #11 (first issue, Dec 1948). CGC Grade = 9.8 & 9.4 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $720. SOLD – Thank You! For the 9.8 and double-cover collectors out there. Etta was a short-lived, four-issue run, and I think it’s safe to say that whoever owns this specimen will be able to permanently lay claim to the top registry set for this title.
Feature Book #02 – Popeye (1937). Raw Grade = FN+ to FN/VF ow. Price = $495. SOLD – Thank You! Significant flaws include some light soiling to the front cover, some minor color flaking to the bottom edge of the back cover, and a 2.5"-long (primarily non color breaking) bend to the bottom left corner of the back cover. Feature Book #25 – Flash Gordon (1941). Raw Grade = FA white. Price = $110. SOLD – Thank You! The cover is detached and cleanly split over its entire length, with pieces out as shown in the scan. Everything is still totally supple (as evidenced by the bone white splash page peeking through the front cover). The #2 and 25 are both 8½ by 11½” comics that were left raw only because CGC was not yet encapsulating oversized books back in 2006 (when this collection was certified).
Feature Book #27 – Blondie (1940). CGC Grade = 9.4 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $550. Feature Book #37 – The Katzenjammer Kids (1943). CGC Grade = 9.2 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $350. Feature Book #39 – The Phantom (1944). CGC Grade = 9.4 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $1520.
Feature Book #41 – The Katzenjammer Kids (1944). CGC Grade = 7.5 white. Census Rank = #2. Price = $110. Feature Book #46 – Mandrake (1946). CGC Grade = Qualified 8.5 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $325. Qualified due to a detached centerfold. Equivalent to a Universal (blue label) grade of 7.0. Feature Book #51 – Rip Kirby (1948). CGC Grade = 7.5 ow-wh. Census Rank = #1. Price = $230. SOLD – Thank You!
Feature Book #54 – Rip Kirby (1948). Raw Grade = GD white. Price = $55. If not for the 3” x 1½” chunk missing from the bottom left corner of the last page and back cover, this would be a solid VF book. Feature Book #55 – Mandrake (1948). CGC Grade = 8.5 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $475.
The Funnies #42 (Apr 1940). CGC Grade = 9.2 ow-wh. Census Rank = #1. Price = $1560. SOLD – Thank You! A real beauty. Since CGC entered the marketplace, only three other books within The Funnies #1-49 run have been certified as 9.2 or better, including the #40-9.2 ow-wh Church copy (which sold for 2.55x guide in 2010 and 2.79x guide in 2002), the #42-9.2 ow-wh Church copy (which sold for 1.37x guide in 2007), and a #46-9.2 cr-ow file copy (which sold for 1.07x guide in 2007).
Johnny Hazard #6 (Nov 1948). CGC Grade = 9.6 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $460. SOLD – Thank You! King Comics #8 (Nov 1936). Raw Grade = PR white. Price = $45. If not for the panels neatly cut from four different pages, this would be a solid VF- book. A very attractive copy of one of the earliest Golden Age comics. King Comics #33 (Dec 1938). CGC Grade = 7.5 white. Census Rank = #2. Price = $265. SOLD – Thank You!
Milt Gross Funnies #1 (Aug 1947). CGC Grade = 9.4 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $580. Popular Comics #98 (Apr 1944). CGC Grade = 9.2 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $315. SOLD – Thank You! Popular Comics #132 (Feb 1947). CGC Grade = 9.2 white. Census Rank = #2. Price = $125. SOLD – Thank You!
Single Series #26 – Little Mary Mixup (1940). CGC Grade = 9.0 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $485. Single Series #28 – Ella Cinders (1942). CGC Grade = Qualified 9.2 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $95. Sparkle Comics #1 (Oct-Nov 1948). CGC Grade = 9.4 white. Census Rank = #1. Price = $330. SOLD – Thank You!
