I asked for people who wanted to donate bronze/copper/modern superman books to Mike to PM me. That is getting messy. So I am creating a post to handle just these books so we can eliminate any duplication of issues. I know it will happen but we can try and keep it down. So please list any Superman titles and issue numbers that you want to donate in this post. The way I look at it this includes any title from these time periods that include Superman. Action, Adventures of,Worlds Finest,DC Comics Presents,mini-series,etc.
If you want to donate and don’t want your name mentioned send me the list and I will put you down as anonymous. Also if you need the address to send the books,PM me and I’ll get it to you.

I was wondering if he had any CGC books. I am going to send him an Action comics Annual #1 CGC 9.8. I will include some raw Actions from the GA/SA era.

This story thouroughly disgusted me when I read it.
It's threads like this that make me proud to be part of this community.
Although I've never been a fan or collector of Superman, I'll certainly have a dig through my old DC stuff and see if there are any odd issues to donate.
If I find anything worth sending across to the U.S. you can most certainly have it.

suggestion, is there any way to just keep one master list going on the first post? I know it will take some editing on your behalf but otherwise this thread is just going to become a big jumble

Really awesome of you, genrlzod, for helping to make this happen
I'm so sorry that I cannot work too much on this right now, because we are also running around helping our recently arrived exchange student get situated and registered for school!
Just want to point out that all those interested in sending books should get the (not publicly available) address via PM with either myself or genrlzod. Please do not post this address anywhere because it is Mike's friend who does not wish his address to be out in the inter-webs.
Also amazing for me to see (although well-meaning) somebody in Facebook say that they have Mike's address to pass along. This is unbelievable since this will only attract more Garys to his house!
I'm also not sure if all these donation funds that are being set up are legit. It seems best to just send Mike comic books or action figures. Mike's friend told me he really is saddened by the theft of his Captain Action figure with Superman costume. I'm going to re-post the original story from St. Louis Today because it does have the most detail about his collection.

GRANITE CITY • If Mike Meyer were a character in one of his favorite comic books, right about now he'd be looking up to see his red-caped hero swooping down.
Superman would use his X-ray vision and super hearing to track down the ill-willed individual who stole from him and hurl mountains if needed to capture him. That Meyer knows only the first name of the man, and can draw just a rough sketch of what he looks like, wouldn't matter.
"He uses his powers not to benefit himself, but to help others," Meyer said, explaining his fondness for the fictional character. "He's the champion of the oppressed."
Meyer, 48, of Granite City, has been on Social Security for a mental disability since age 23. To supplement that, he has worked part time at a McDonald's in Collinsville since 1996. He lives alone in a humble, two-bedroom home with his dogs: Krypto and Dyno. Just about every room is a shrine to his hero.
It's Meyer's starry-eyed worship of Superman, protector of the world as it should be, that makes the theft from his home two weeks ago seem particularly cruel.
Meyer was tricked out of about 1,800 of his favorite Superman comic books, some dating to the 1950s. He also lost many of his favorite collector's items: lunch boxes, an old-time radio, a Monopoly game and television set — all Superman-themed. The loot is worth about $4,000 to $5,000 in total, according to a friend who also collects.
The back bedroom of Meyer's house used to have nearly 100 Superman figurines tacked to the walls. Now, those walls are bare.
Also stolen was Meyer's Captain Action Superman figurine with costume, a sore point for Meyer because it reminded him of one he had as a child.
"A lot of that was sentimental, and he stole that from me," Meyer said. "He invaded my privacy, and he took away my peace of mind."
Granite City police are investigating.
Meyer bought his first Superman comic book for about 20 cents in 1974. Soon the then-10-year-old discovered he could also buy the back issues. That allowed him to delve into the character's earliest appearances in Action Comics, then follow Superman's evolution through the years, along with a changing lineup of costumed villains. Growing up, Meyer spent all his spare money on comic books.
"I had pretty much every issue of Superman from number 99 to the present," said Meyer, who keeps a hand-sewn Superman costume hanging on his back door underneath a brown trench coat.
Meyer gets giddy recalling the première of the first Christopher Reeve "Superman" movie, which his father took him to see on Dec. 15, 1978, at the B.A.C. Cinema in Belleville. His dad died when Meyer was 20; his mom, three years later.
Meyer said mostly only his friends and family knew of his collection, but he also made the mistake once of telling someone less trustworthy: a guy named Gary whom he worked with at the Hardee's on Madison Avenue in 1991.
Meyer said he ran into Gary recently while at Kyle's Baseball Cards and Comics in Granite City. Gary asked Meyer whether he still collected Superman items and asked to see the collection. Meyer first gave an excuse, but then Gary called him later saying he was in the neighborhood and hoped to stop by.
"He just kept talking like a salesman," Meyer said. "He wouldn't take no for an answer."
Meyer said he let Gary into the house that day and gave him a quick tour. Gary asked to see "my most precious comics," Meyer said.
The next night, Gary was back again, asking whether Meyer would let Gary's girlfriend watch some of his Superman movies. Meyer said while he and the girlfriend watched, Gary disappeared for a while.
Meyer noticed the theft two days later, on the morning of Aug. 24, and called police. All he knows is that Gary has dark hair, a goatee, is about 35 and drives a silver or gray car.
Meyer has taken heart in the fact that he wasn't cleaned out of his entire collection. Still, he said, "I have moments where I want to cry."
He sees Gary as a real-life Lex Luthor, calling him "a no-good excuse for a human being."
He noted, "That's pretty low if someone steals your stuff."

Other: a cool DC Legends Superman Fig - his hands will have to be glued (I'll do that before shipping it out). He comes with a cool stand and is a pretty nice Fig - was simply packaged poorly when I bought him.
I have some duplicates of above - if he'd like them, they are his...
I know it wouldn't have been part of Mike's old collection, but I just bought him a copy of the new Jim Lee variant Action #1. I'll be getting it out in the mail tomorrow. Will also see what else I can throw in the package.

Should I try and avoid duplication?
Superman Vs. Spider-man, nice choice.
I would say that 80s stuff is fine. The story talked about how he is a big Superman fan so I have no idea if he would like Batman or other titles. I do know that some of the donations will include other titles so I guess a few Batman books would be OK. As for duplication we are trying to avoid it, but we know a few will get by.

I found a lot more stuff in my dupes box....
Superman : The Dalies 1939 - 1940 (SC) Superman : The Dalies 1940 - 1941 (SC) Superman : The Dalies 1941 - 1942 (SC)
I also put in a whole stack of stuff from 1979ish to 1986ish (all pre-crisis) : Actions, Supermans, New Adventures of Superboy and some misc issues. I'm not gonna list them out here. Mike just might have some dupes to trade or something.
Mailing the package tomorrow. Just putting together this box was a joy.
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies HC (Signed by Jeph Loeb) Superman/Batman: Supergirl HC (Signed by Jeph Loeb & Michael Turner) Superman: Brainiac HC Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes HC Superman convention promo bookmark Superman Returns Daily Planet Newspaper (theater promo) DC Promo Poster featuring Jim Lee art of Supes/Bats/WW Superman pullout poster from Hero Illustrated (key art from newsstand cover of Adv. #505) Promo poster for Action #700 (about 10x13, designed like a movie poster) Oversized promo card for Superman w/new costume from 1990s 2006 convention promo posters for Superman (by Busiek/Pacheco) and Superman/Batman (by Verheiden/Van Sciver) 1990s JLA Superman figure (out of box, but complete with stand and flag)
If I can find any single issues to include, I'll be sure to add them here. In the meantime, I'll go ahead and send this lot as soon as I can.
You're doing a very good thing by doing this, folks. Thanks again for setting all this up.
Hey I just read about this over on the Mattel Website and decided I wanna help out. I too, love the Superman and have a huge collection. Big enough that I can certainly share it with someone who would appreciate it. Heroes should do more than just excite us with well thrown punches and witty reparte', they should insipre us to help others if we can.
Does anybody know a list of what action figures Mike needs to replace 'cause I got boxes full of Superman figures I was gonna put up on Ebay but I would rather just send them to him to replace what that scumbag stold!
I will go through my bronze and silver age stuff. Also got tons of more recent moden Superman stuff i was about to put into a garage sale but would love to just send out to him....do we know if he needs more recent (Say last 5 years worth of) Superman, Action ect....?
I bought the Superman: Peace on Earth and Death of Superman TPBs on Amazon.com and had them shipped to Mike, via his friend Bill. I know it isn't much but I'm deployed to Afghanistan right now and I wanted to help however I could.
Hello. This story was been weighing on my mind for the past few days. I find this theft heartless, disgusting, and reprehensible. Recently, something nice was done for me and I was asked only to pay it forward. I believe this is my chance to even out the karma.
Although my collection is not nearly as extensive as others, I do have some issues that I wish to donate to Mike. It is my sincere hope that these few books will bring a smile to Mike's face and help restore his faith in humanity. I am able to donate these following books:
Action Comics #850 Superman: World of New Krypton #7 War of the Supermen #0 Adventures of Superman #500 (Sealed white bag collectors edition) Superman vol.2 #77(Funeral for a Friend part 8) Action Comics #1 (reprint)
I will be sending these out tomorrow. I hope they make it to him safely and that the thief gets what he deserves. To everyone else sending him items, I am proud of you all. You all possess the true spirit of Superman.

This story has just been eating at my heart and not having any Superman comics to help cheer Mike up isn't helping. Then I remembered I bought a big head Superman hand puppet at our antique mall several years ago on a whim. It's a little scuffy, but I hope he'll enjoy it. I'm working the weekend and Monday so I'll mail it off to Bill on Tuesday
Bless you Mike, and I hope you'll be able to retreive some, if not all, of your collection.
I bought the Superman: Peace on Earth and Death of Superman TPBs on Amazon.com and had them shipped to Mike, via his friend Bill. I know it isn't much but I'm deployed to Afghanistan right now and I wanted to help however I could.
This is what it's all about, folks. Unbelievable. Serving in Afghanistan, but still making an effort to help someone they don't even know back home. Makes me even prouder to be an American today. Just fantastic.
Courtesy of my local comic shop - Aquilonia in Troy, NY - I'll be adding a DC Direct All-Star Superman Super Lois figure to the package I'm putting together. (Thanks, Bob!) Just need to finish going through some back issues to see what else is going in the package, and then hope to have it in the mail on Monday!

I just found this thread. I've got a few HG Superman/Superboy type books - mainly those big "Dollar Books". I can look for them later today and check with the list.

I find it amazing that so many people are willing to step up and help out a stranger. Kind people still exist and charity and compassion is still alive.
Also wonderful to see so many people who have never posted here before helping out. Hope a few of you stick around.

I just read this:
A message from Mike was posted on Facebook by another friend of his…
From Mike: I want to Thank you my new found friends. It’s almost as if you all formed a fan club which should be referred to as “Supermen/women United” and this dark cloud that was over me has disappeared and the sky is clear. You are certainly applying the scripture Matthew 7 vrs 12. On the other hand this Gerry who is a no good buzzered like predator is applying the traits in the scripture of 2nd Timothy 3 vrs 2 to 4 and he will not enter into the Kingdom. Thank you very much for your support it has been very encouraging. On the other hand if my stuff is returned to me I will inform you. Special note “I would like to see George Reeves on a postage stamp.
Also word is out that the first set of packages and cards have begun to arrive.

Does anybody know if someone has submitted an original 1964 Aurora Superman model? I happen to have a collection of vintage Aurora models and that's the only thing that has to do with Superman in my home (I'm a Batman/Deadpool fan).
I'd be more than happy to send it so long as no one else has already donated one.

That is cool.
To answer your question, no it has not been donated so feel free to send it.
Went through the books I have just hanging out and needing a new home (Some are bargain bin acquisitions but I figured they would hold things over for Mike until his collection returns.) Found a few things for Mike:
Superboy 1-20 (Tv Show from 80's) Adventures of Superboy 1-54 (80's run) missing issue #52 Fanboy trade (Signed by Evanier and Aragones and a drawing by Aragones) Superman: Birthright trade (Waid) Some assorted issues of Superman from the 90's (Man of Steel) Collectors Figurine #2 (Superman / Phone Booth and Phamplet about Supes) Justice League #113 (100 page Spectacular) Lois Lane # 1,2 (90's Missing Children mini) A few beat up Silver Age issues of Action, Superman and World's Finest. (Readable and good place holder books)
This is a great thing everyone is doing for a fellow collector. Hope my contributions help. Will send them out this week. Tim

Thanks! I just wanted to double check. So far I have found six comics from the Silver and Bronze Age:
They are Superman 153 (May 1962)
2. Superman 159 (February 1963)
3. Superman 224 (Feb. 1970)
4. Superman 238 (June 1971)
5. Superman 260 (January 1973)
6. Superman 274 (April 1974)
And finally, I'll give him a low grade, raw, probably a 3.0 Superman 16 from the Golden Age. What the heck. I'm not going to sell it and this way I know Mike will enjoy a nice golden age book with Lois Lane on the cover!

I have seen it on 3 different sites so Bill's desire to keep his address off the web worked for a few days. I think our site had it first thanks to the work by Book Maestro. He contacted the reporter and got in contact with Bill. A day or two later I started so see more sites talk about Mike and what happened to him. Soon posts were made and Bill's address was online. So while I have no problem with people sending me a PM for Bill's address, and I will not post it just confirm that it is correct, it is already public.
I just hope Bill has a lot of extra space. All sorts of items are being sent. Lots of pictures and toys. Of course comics, and just tonight I saw someone created a Superman quilt for Mike. Who knows what is being sent without a comment. I would love to see Bill's house in about a week or two. It's going to be wall to wall Superman.

The Facebook page setup for Mike http://www.facebook.com/SaveSuperman has messages from Mike's friend Bill and he just recently posted these pictures and messages.
Note the Superman radio in the background. Mike lost the radio in the burglary.
Mike made this costume himself and wore it to the Superman Festival in Metropolis, Ill.
Not an original Superman 1, but a reprint. Ha... still it was one of his favorites.
Note that virtually everything in this photo were among items stolen.
Does anybody know if someone has submitted an original 1964 Aurora Superman model? I happen to have a collection of vintage Aurora models and that's the only thing that has to do with Superman in my home (I'm a Batman/Deadpool fan).

That is cool.
To answer your question, no it has not been donated so feel free to send it.
Thanks, I'll be sending it out this Wednesday. I've got a spare anyhow, it's just missing the two walls and I can easily deal with a temporary bare spot on my shelf until I find the missing parts. Bringing someone else joy is a lot more important than a silly collection. I just hope the model doesn't break in shipping. I'll probably go ahead and include a tube of glue just to be on the safe side.
I've had my home broken into before and even though I had nothing of real value I was still truly heartbroken that it had happened. I can't imagine how someone like Mike feels knowing someone walked in and took things he deeply cherished.

Just got back from the PO and mailed my package. I sent it media mail so if you would so kindly send me a PM letting me know the package has arrived. I reread the Superman 16 from 1942; Mike will get a kick out of reading it. Good stories and fine golden age art.l

The first set of packages are arriving at Bill's house. While I know they are not all from us here I'm sure some are.
Bill's quote from Facebook.
It has been nearly an hour since I arrived home and I am still numb. I pulled up in front of my house to find 31 packages and envelopes stuffed into our mailbox and piled up in front of our front door... all for Mike. To say I am overwhelmed is a total understatment. When my wife walked through the front door, I think she thought we were running a UPS branch office. The addresses are from across the United States. I am planning to see Mike on Wednesday or Thursday of this week and will take everything I have to date over there. I intend to take some photos to post here. Thank you Thank you Thank you... You all are sooo amazing!!!

What you guys are doing is great. Being a recent collector specializing only in Batman, I really don't have anything to contribute, but I'll double check my closet tonight. I might have a non-comic item or two. I get the impression it wasn't just comics that this individual treasured.

. . . . . Yeah, I sort of like early Bronze Age Bats, raw or slabbed. I don't discriminate.
These guys aren't too bad either. Missing just two.

From Bill posting on the Save Superman Help Mike Meyer facebook page:
Just got back from Granite City and a long visit with Mike and his dogs Krypto and Dyno. I am not sure what he was expecting, but when I started carrying in boxes of cards and packages from throughout the U.S. and Australia, it was pretty clear that was NOT what he was expecting. He opened every package carefully, taking time to read the addresses, any enclosed notes and then admiring each item ...one by one. "Ohhh," he said time and again, "this was one of the things I had stolen," or "this is something I always wanted but never had." At one point he sat back and remarked, "It is so wonderful that people would think of me. I am not a celebrity." There were very few duplicates and those were mainly comics. I am exhausted tonight, but will post some pics tomorrow. This is truly a beautiful thing -- a light in a world that sometimes seems pretty dark.

Bill is truly a great person -- and a friend that we wish we could all have. He told me that he had attempted to contact the local television stations to cover the theft, but they were uninterested. So he contacted people he knew at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and that is when a reporter went out to talk to Mike. Jennifer Mann published the story on the St. Louis Today website and it was subsequently picked up by the comic blogs...and the rest is history
It was Bill's perseverance that brought this story to light, and he continues to be a good friend to Mike. The best part of this whole ordeal is that it shows how our individual decision to help another person really does matter. I'm very proud to be a new member of this community

Reading through the comments, on the FB page, looks like there may be some good news about finding the thieves.
Quote:
Thank you Jill - Someone just posted a comment on the Newsarama piece that they've found out who the thief was so there's a chance these items might find their way back to him but I'm going to list them here as soon as I get back to my home computer as well as edit them into the Newsarama piece. And then hopefully I can coordinate with Bill to get the items to Mike if that's ok with everyone. note from jill pantozzi.
In one of the discussions at StlToday.com, it was noted that, "Mike explained to me of the items he misses the most are the DC Archive books of Superman from DC Comics. If anyone has these or knows where to get them please send them to him." I'll add some Superman archives, so with what's already contributed he'll get Superman Archives #1-4 and Superman in Action Comics archives #1. I'm adding a few other odds & ends as well, which are already noted in the updated list below.

I am new here, but have been keeping track of what's going on since last week, when I started thinking what to do for this guy.
I already forwarded a drawing from a UK student cartoonist, who requested help in printing out and sending a custom drawing to Mike. So that's been done, as of yesterday.
I am going to be sending two Superman t-shirts (blue, with the red Superman logo), and a set of stainless steel dogtags that have the Superman logo on it and a sentiment from Jor-El on it to his son Kal-El. I'm waiting for them to arrive from the Ebay sellers, but with any luck, based on e-mail correspondence with the sellers, I anticipate receiving them within a day or two and sending them on to Mike Meyer, care of Bill Smith, by early next week.
So please add my two Superman t-shirts (just plain red logo, on blue shirt) and the dogtags. I didn't have Superman comic books---have been out of active collecting for some years---but I figured I could do something to bring a smile to this man's face.
Yahoo! Quoting from that above news story, that the scumbag has been arrested, "Investigators were able to link the suspect to this crime as well and recover all of the victim’s Superman memorabilia and return it to the owner. "
I hope that's true!

Great stuff! Throw the book at him for all the charges!
That strong arm robbery against the elderly will cost him some time as well.

This is fantastic news, just made my Friday even better!
This Gerry guy looks more like a Batman street-thug sort of villain, but regardless one scumbag is like any other kind of scumbag. It seems like he is escalating his crimes, so good thing that he is now behind bars. Hopefully all his victims will get their possessions back.

From Bill on Facebook:
Important: To all Mike's "new" and "old" friends. If you were planning to purchase or mail any items for Mike tomorrow (Friday), could you please hold off for one day. Again, it would be really great if you all could just hold off on any "Mike-related" buying or mailing for one day. Thanks!! Bill Smith
I'm really glad to hear Mike got his books back. I'm still going to send the stuff I put on the list, but after reading the message from Bill, I'll wait until Monday to send stuff.
There is a story online indicating that the thief has been caught and Mike's stuff has been returned. And now generlzod has posted a note from Mike asking to hold off on mailing.
IF it turns out that Mike did indeed get all of his stuff back, Mike would be left wondering what he should do with all the stuff he was given. Mike's had enough trouble lately, so the last thing he needs is a big moral dilemma about what he should do with hundreds or thousands of dollars in donated goods.
My suggestion, if that happens, is this: Mike should keep what he wants/needs for his collection, since everything was given to him as a gift. Mike may then choose to do whatever he wants to with the remaining items, such as duplicates. He could keep them, sell them to enhance his collection, or choose to "pay it forward" and give them to somebody else he deems to be deserving (which would give him a chance to play real-life "Superman.")
I can't speak for anybody else who donated, but I can say that's how I feel about the things I contributed. Mike's had enough trouble from all of this, and hopefully even if he gets (or has gotten) his original stuff back the donated items will remain a joy and not a burden for Mike.

I sent 2 boxes of the stuff I had for him, was going through one more box, I'll hold those. He might not get his stuff back all that quickly, the police might need it for evidence.

My thoughts exactly. I gave my box of stuff to Mike unconditionally. I would hope he finds some new items he cherishes and I certainly don't think he is obligated to give any of it away, but would understand if duplicates and some items didn't fit his needs.
I would love if Mike came across a young Superman fan who might get just as hooked as Mike if given a good head start on a collection, but would be just fine if he put it all on eBay to buy himself a life size Nick Cage Superman cutout or anything else he wants.

It could be quite a burden for Mike to mail all the packages back. Speaking for my donation I hope that he keeps the books he wants and gives the rest away; perhaps to an up and coming collector or his friend who has championed his cause and accepted donations.
This from the latest article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch:
Quote:
As for his Superman collection, Meyer now has close to double what he had lost. Smith has about 40 more items ready to be delivered, and dozens more have been promised. Meyer said he wants to take the donations and give them to charity, possibly delivering them to a children's hospital.
"People were generous to me; this is how I can be generous in return," he said.
If only this world had more Mikes and fewer Gerrys. Three cheers for Mike!

I am going to assume that everyone here has no problem with Mike keeping the books that we sent him. If someone does what there items back, PM me and we'll see what we can do.
As for Mike's collection, looks like he got everything Superman related back. This is a post from Mike's brother Gary Meyer: I had the extreme pleasure of calling Mike and breaking the news to him that his comics had been recovered. I know any one of you would have loved to make this call. (But I'm glad it was me lol). This was one of the happiest moments of Mikes life. At least 1 minute of jubilation or more before he responded to me. Wow! But I think the fact that so many friends and strangers banding together for him, made Mike almost as happy. He still can't believe that all you people came together to help him. Mike has lived alone most of his life and felt alone. "You" all proved him wrong. For this "moment" I thank you all. Especially Bill Smith, who made it happen. God Bless you all !!
I think it's safe to say that we can stop sending items to Mike. If you have already pledged items I say send them, but I think it's safe to say that we can stop adding new items.

Another post from Mike's brother Gary
It's great news that Mike got his Superman comics back! However, still missing are his collection of John Deere Tractors. I don't by no means to sound greedy but, these tractors were Xmas presents given to him by my Father (a farmer) who is Mikes uncle and Mikes' deceased Fathers brother. I hope the GC Police question Gerry Armbruster as he is now in their jail. He stole them so he is the only person who knows where they are.

I agree.

In my note to him, I told him, if he got his stuff back to either keep, sell, or donate the books to someone else that may enjoy them.

Update from Bill.
Things have been happening so fast in the past 24 hours, and there have been so many differing news accounts, that I think it's important to let people who have so generously donated items as part of this effort know exactly where things stand. To date, there have been about 120 packages and letters received, with some items duplicated (mostly newer comic books), but many are items that Mike has n...ever had in his collection, as well as unique art, and could never have afforded to buy for himself. I know he is hoping to keep many of these items to add to his display and as a way to remember the generosity and kindness of all of you. It is the duplicate items, again mostly newer comics, that he hopes to donate to charity. If you have any other suggestions regarding this, please contact me at bsmith7041@aol.com post here. Thanks!

Mike holding a photocopy of a Joe Shuster Superman drawing, one of the many gifts Mike has received from his new friends.
Mike on the phone Thursday night with Superman Returns star Brandon Routh. The call was set up by Routh's staff after the actor learned of Mike's bad (and then good) fortune. The two spoke for about a half hour, covering everything from the movie's special effects to Mike's vast knowledge of past actors who had played the Superman role. Mike was absolutely thrilled and I am thinking Mr. Routh may have learned a thing or two also. Note the scene from the movie playing on the TV screen in the background.

Just awesome all around. Will put together a nice box for Mike as soon as I find two free minutes ( lucky for him I hate Superman haha however I have a ton of SA books due to buying collections ). I have little faith in modern man but a story like this ( with a great outcome ) makes me hold out hope. A BIG round of applause to everyone that donated time, books, etc.

This just made my day!
No matter how bad things are there is something out there to restore your faith in humanity. Sorry for the cheesiness but knowing the victim got his stuff back PLUS all the donations makes me incredibly happy
Superman fan shares his bounty with kids at St. Louis hospital
Mike Meyer stepped into the elevator at St. Louis Children's Hospital wearing a favorite blue Superman T-shirt. Keith Howard, of Superfriends of Metropolis, stood with red cloth boots peeking out from beneath his trousers.
"Probably a lot of them are going to capture my heart today," Meyer said, with a shy grin. He was referring to the young patients assembling on the eighth floor for their weekly Wednesday bingo game.
As always, the calling of squares and awarding of prizes would be broadcast through the hospital, allowing children to participate from their rooms. But unique this day, a Superman theme would permeate the play.
With a quick change, Howard donned the rest of his Superman costume. Hospital staff stacked six boxes of Superman collectibles and figurines on the prize table, nearly quadrupling what the children could vie for.
Meyer had donated it all, feeling it was only proper.
Meyer, 48, of Granite City, lives off of Social Security checks for a mental disability and his pay from a part-time job at McDonald's. He lives alone with his dogs Krypto and Dyno. Collecting Superman memorabilia is his lifelong passion.
In late August, he was tricked out of more than 1,800 of his prized items.
News reports about the theft went viral, spreading to comic book collectors across the world. Within weeks, Meyer's living room was half-filled with donations. Superfriends of Metropolis, a group of collectors and fans from Illinois, helped coordinate it.
In the meantime, police caught the suspected thief and recovered the loot. That left Meyer with more Superman items than he ever dreamed of.
"I've been blessed with a lot of things, so I wanted to share them," he explained on Wednesday of his decision to donate the duplicates. He added, "When you make somebody happy, it does something for you, too."
Howard, of Belleville, said nobody who gave to Meyer has asked for his or her donations back — in fact, just the opposite.
"The fact that this has now come full circle is really, really great," he said.
On Wednesday, as a chorus of "Bingo!" rang out, the Superman collectibles slowly left the prize table.
Not everyone chose Superman. Caylea Conrad, 8, of Gainesville, Mo., who has Hirschsprung's disease, a congenital disorder of the colon, chose a baby doll. Earlier, she had talked to Meyer about her collection of Barbies and how upset she would be if they were stolen.
Johnny Sutherland, 4, of West Plains, Mo., at the hospital for stomach problems, ran away from the table grinning with a large green truck in his arms.
"That's OK," Meyer said, chuckling. "I'd grab the truck, too."
A set of Superman Matchbox cars went to a winner in pediatric intensive care. A Man of Steel lunchbox, to a child in 7 West.
Toby Hawkridge, 6, who has cerebral palsy, flew from the United Kingdom to get a spinal operation at Children's. He had to leave bingo early for therapy, but his mom, Kelly Urch, stayed to finish his game. She was on strict orders to pick a Superman figurine if they won. Toward the end of the second game, she yelled "Bingo!"
As she left with the prize, she stopped to shake Meyer's hand. He grinned and gave her an emphatic thumbs up.
