My girlfriend and I found a Richard Gere movie from 1997 that somehow neither of us had seen called Red Corner. We liked it alot. Here's the summary from IMDB:
Jack Moore is an American attorney having talks in Bejing about founding the first satellite TV joint venture. Suddenly he is arrested, accused of murder and has to prove it was a frame-up together with his court-appointed attorney Shen Yuelin.

Back in the early to mid 90's as Independent American movies went through a popularity phase, I also started to watch a lot of foreign films as they made their way to the States. In particular, I really got into French films because, well, I find French woman to be hot, but also because of the lack of melodrama used in their movies. I just found them to be a lot more in touch with human emotion than over the top American productions. I realize this doesn't really appeal to the primarily action oriented or sci-fi fantasy movies here, BUT, for those of you who are still reading this...
Anyway, Krzysztof Kieslowski was a director who wrote and directed a couple of movies I really liked a lot from this period, his Three Colours: Blue, Three Colours: White, Three Colours: Red, and The Double Life of Veronique. I had read at some point afterwards that he retired.
Yesterday, my girlfriend says, "Wanna watch a movie?" I figure I've got a few hours until work, and I'm thinking 'Dexter', but she has this movie qued up on Netflix called 'Heaven' about a girl who takes the law into her own hands after her husband is murdered. I'm thinking, "Alright, whatever."
I'm watching the intro and thinking, this is not an American production. There's something familiar with how this scene is being directed. As the opening credits are being displayed over the into scene, up pops: Written by Kryzysztof Kieslowski!
I liked it!

The Black Book 2006
One of the best WW2 movies I have ever seen
The Secret in Their Eyes 2009
Both of these movies are foreign films - so subtitles. Great movies
