Now bring on the Belgians...Chelsea already have three of them (although Thibaut Courtois will probably be loaned out to Atlético Madrid for another year after being instrumental in them winning the Europa League title) and hopefully Eden Hazard will be the fourth to go blue

Short CL final report:

Declined one final offer of EUR 6,000 for my pair of tickets.
The wife and I drove up to the stadium a bit early and got there even earlier. Much less traffic than expected, probably due to 50% of the audience flying in in their private helicopters.
Atmosphere inside was a bit lackluster, thanks to 50% of the audience not really being interested in the game but instead talking on their phones about the flight in and how their newly acquired Facebook stock is going to pay for their new helicopters.
Took a few pictures.
Tried buying a beer but found out they only sold non-alcoholic (or low alcohol, can't remember) beer due to the "high-risk" nature of the match.
Watched the match, hurt my hand from banging against the rail every time Gomez made an insufficiently_thoughtful_person of himself. Thankfully he didn't touch the ball between the 46th and the 120th minute.
Smashed the camera when Robben missed the penalty.
Sat there for about an hour after it was over, completely numb, can't remember a single thing about the victory celebration.
Went back to the car, got out of the parking structure about two hours later with a heavy carbon monoxide overdose and drove back home.
Fantasized about what we could have done with the EUR 6,000.
Arrived home and decided to try and get tickets for next year's final at Wembley. Got really drunk.
The end.

See, I don't agree with this at all. Just because only 1 goal was scored against them doesn't mean they were playing great defense. Bayern had clear cut opportunities that they blew because of poor finishing, not because of great defensive play. Yes, Chelsea were making some great blocks inside the penalty area, but that's because Bayern were moving the ball through the penalty area with impunity for much of the game.

If I see a team that gave up one goal but easily could've given up 3, I don't say that's a great defensive performance, I say that's a lucky defensive performance.

It's not even worth discussing this with you. IMHO any team that wins a game, legitimately, deserves it.

It amuses me to no end to hear an Arsenal supporter saying this.

In any event, I wasn't even debating the issue of "deservng" with you anymore, just whether Chelsea really put in a "great" defensive effort.

But I guess you and Nick and Andrew will all say that so long as no goals were allowed, or only 1 in this case, then by definition it was a great defensive effort. And Westlife are a more deserving band because they sold more records, legitimately, than, say, the Velvet Underground, as if that's all there is to it.

In a football match, a team attempts to overcome the opposition with a mixture of selection, skill and tactics. If the tactics prove successful and they win the game, they will have deserved it.

It doesn't make them a better footballing team, necessarily, but it does make them more deserving in that one game.

If Bayern had had three perfectly good goals incorrectly ruled out, you'd have a point. But they didn't.

Stop making sense.

If perceptions really were as you guys make it out to be, then no one would ever say a team "stole" a game, which implies that a team managed to get a win even though it didn't deserve to. People use that expression all the time, even when the win wasn't the result of bad refereeing decisions.

But, seeing as you guys all seem overly hung up on the word "deserving", then I retract what I said about Chelsea being less deserving and will simply say that Bayern were better than Chelsea on the day.

Now let the pillorying commence that the team that scored more goals was by definition the "better" team.

Why?

Considering all the excuses you've made for Liverpool's losses this year I can see why you're sticking to your guns \(shrug\)

I've learned from all the excuses made by Arsenal supporters over the years when they whined about their pretty football not winning games that they deserved to have won.

He's more of a Boyzone man to be fair.

lol Great report! Too bad about Bayern's loss, I thought they were the better team on the day, even if Gomez was shockingly disappointing.
